The game is one of my absolute favorites, and so far this version of it is running wonderfully... except when I try to save. Both "Save" and "Save as..." immediately crash the game to the desktop. Help please?
I'm on Windows XP Media Edition.

Same with me. I've tried disabling compatibility mode, but the behavior is identical.
Just discovered that I can't actually remove it from windows 95 compatibility mode. It just reverts automatically.
Another thread describes the registry hack you need to do to turn of forced compatibility mode. It's easy enough to do, but the problem is that Riven won't run at all on my computer without Windows 95 Compatibility mode enabled.
If I turn off all the compatibility settings the program doesn't even open...it just crashes instantly.
If I turn on "Disable Visual Themes" it will start to open but still crashes before the game fully launches.
Windows 98 compatibility mode seems to be the same as Windows 95 mode...opens and runs, but crashes upon save or open.

Does the crash happens imediately when clicking on 'save' or 'save as...' menu options, or does the browser window to choose a filename and savegame location comes up and it only crashes when you click on 'Save' on the browser window ?

Oh, it's immediately when clicking on the menu options.

Ok.
I'll install gog's version of Riven to see if i get the same thing or if i can spot what the problem might be. I'll post back one way or the other.
And just to update... I was playing with it, and even if it's possible to save, I wouldn't be able to open anything either, as the "open..." option suffers the same glitch.
Ok, i haven't installed yet, but i did find this, on the ubi forums on a post by cydian, regarding the 'crash when trying to save' problem.
"Apparently, when Riven installs itself on your harddrive, it sticks itself into a Read-Only folder. Why, I don't know. Attempts to change the security settings are fruitless...for some reason it changes itself back automatically.
So this is what I did, and it works.
First, create a new folder in C:\Program Files (assuming that's where you installed Riven). Copy over everything from inside your Riven directory (BUT NOT THE FOLDER CALLED "DATA") to this new directory.
Inside your new directory, create a folder called "Data" (without the quotes). Go into the Data folder inside your Riven directory and copy/paste everything from that into your New Folder/Data directory. Run the game from there, and you should be able to save and load with no problem."

Thank you much, good sir!
Saving now works, and I'll be playing the heck out of this game tonight.

No problem, glad i could help.
Have fun ;)
Sadly this didn't work for me.
I created a new game directly, copied the contents of C:\Program Files\Gog.com\Riven into it. Created my own data folder, copied the contents of c:\program files\gog.com\riven\data into that.
I put the compatibility mode settings back on the EXE in the new directly and launched the game. It opens and it works, but still crashing to desktop when saving or opening.
I've gone through the thread and tried a bunch of other stuff recommended
I'm going to try loading it on my windows 7 VM next. If that doesn't work I'm going to dig up a Win98 disk.

Did you try the fix on your VM install or on the host OS ?
The host OS is a Mac. The VM is where I installed it originally.
I suppose I could try running the game via Wine or Crossover, but that's iffy even with brand new software
Ah, i didn't think about that possibility. I assumed it was a (newer) windows host + (older) windows guest, my bad.
Yeah, I can't say 100% that the VM doesn't have anything to do with the problems, because VMs do have unique drivers, but given that the game proper works just fine it seems unlikely to be the cause.

Yeah, it sounds like a folder pemissions problem, or at least i can't think of anything else that would cause the crash when trying to save.
The new Data folder you created in the new directory to where you copied the game files. Have you checked it's not set as 'read only' aswell ?
EDIT:
I just installed gog's version of Riven on my Win7 Ultimate 64bit machine to check out this save problem, and i'm not experiencing it.
-Right clicked the installer to run it as admin,
-Installed the game to the default location,
-Right clicked Riven's shortcut to run it as admin,
And that was it. I can save and load whitout any problems and as far as i can tell everything is working as it should.
