Thought I'd post my solution, even though it's a bit of a work-around.
My main problem is that I cannot type in a file name when I want to save a file. Although I use 'Save As' I can only click on an existing file. I'm on Vista 64, running in Win95 compatibility.
When I renamed my directory none of the videos worked for me. I tried reinstalling in a new directory structure, same save file problem, and renaming that directory meant I lost the video clips. I really did not want to start trouble-shooting QuickTime since it works in the installed location and I'm otherwise happy with the media setup of my machine.
I can click on existing files when using 'Save As' so I put several renamed save.rvn copies in the Riven directory. I just need to remember which one I used last. I like to keep at least a couple of saves in case the current one gets corrupted. Although it would be nice to type in a file name, this work-around doesn't really bother me.
I also thought I could not open saved files but found the answer elsewhere on this forum. Rather than select 'Play Riven' after starting the game, use the alt key to bring up the top menu, then select file and open. If a video clip is playing, you cannot open a file. Hit the space bar for each video until they're done and then you can open a saved game.
Hope this helps someone who's having the same issue I am. I'm happy the problem wasn't as bad as I thought at first glance. It's great to be playing this again and the video clips work way better than I remember on my old machine years ago.
