After installation I tried running the program according to the default setup mode (16-bit 65536 color 640 x 480 screen resolution) When the introductory video failed to run, I knew something was up. So After checking the properties for the program, I tried running the compatibility troubleshooter. It had me test the program first using Win XP SP3. The video still did not play, but I played the game up until the program stopped working at the first encounter with the imager. The program closed. I restarted the troubleshooter running the compatibility with Win Vista SP2. Still no introductory video, but the game went a little further this time until I made my way to the red glowing pillars. Then the program stuttered a little and I could get back in and continue for a few more frames and then it stopped working. Restarted the properties and when straight to the Compatibility mode and selected Win 7. The program went a little further and then stopped working. Restarted the properties, unchecked the Reduced color mode and the Disable display scaling on high DPI settings; leaving checked the comapitibility mode for Win 8 (I'm running 8.1). The program went all the way to returning to the imager to press the yellow button when it stopped working again.

I don't know what else I can do to keep it running. Anyone have some ideas that may help to do that? It would be very much appreciated.

Make sure you are running it as administrator. Both the program and the realmyst setup.exe (I put a shortcut to this on my desktop since it only seems to run once after installation).

I'm running it in windows xp sp 3 as admin and It works great.

Thank you for your response. The only program that appears anywhere is the realMyst.exe setup which asks each time if I want to allow the program to make changes to my computer. That is the only way to get it to start. Unfortunately, it starts from the beginning every time. It will run its course until it crashes. I tried running it as an administrator. This time it worked until I returned to get the result from the imager to retrieve Altrus' message after clicking the imager button. Then I get the error message that the program has stopped working and then I am forced to close the program. Tcha! It looks like I will forever be hitting that dead end, until this issue get's fixed. Support is not going to help much. I just looked at a post from 2010 where the same issue arises for Windows 7 64-bit edition.

Obviously, that has not been addressed, so it stands to reason that realMyst will not really work in Windows 8.1. Hopefully the development team will at some point work those issues out and also get it ready for Windows 10.

Do you have an icon on your desktop to reallmystart.exe? You should if you installed correctly. If not you may want to download and reinstall the game.

I have Windows 8.1 and use the windows xp sp 3 compatablility mode as admin and It works great.

Hey XTharpe,

Thanks for your help! I have never needed to run a program in compatibility mode before attempting to run this "legacy" game, so I wasn't sure how to make the program run in compatibility mode. I ran the Windows 8.1 help content to learn how to do it. After I learned how to do it, the program has run like a top with no problems or stutters.

The only question I have is how to save and bookmark your place? When I want to stop, I press the ESC button on my keyboard. After that, there is a grid on right that says in the bottom right hand corner of my screen above the "Load, Save, Exit" menu items "Your Last Visit." I tried clicking the "Save" option, but it does not respond, so I had to simply click the "Quit" menu item and hope that it actually bookmarked the place where I left off. I got pretty far in the game and I hate to think I would have to start all over again.

Anyway, I now have hope for purchasing the other Myst games with the confidence that I can play them using the compatibility mode. Can I buy you a beer or a coffee or something?

Have a great week! And, happy gaming!

A coffee with a beer chaser is always welcome...

On the grid on the right there are six slots for save games with one dedicated to your last visit. You have to click on a slot then click save. If the slots are all filled then you have to click on a slot then click erase before saving in that slot.

Hope that helps.
