UPDATE as of 7th December 2009
This applies only to installers for Myst Masterpiece downloaded prior to or on 07/12/09. From now on, the process described below should be unnecessary
----------------
The audio-video stutter during animations and during the saving - loading process appears to be caused by the forced Windows 95 compatibility settings on the GOG version of Myst Masterpiece. Unfortunately, the compatibility settings are locked through Registry flags, so you cannot simply disable them using the windows properties dialogue box.
However, there is a very simple solution and even people that have no experience with the registry should be able to do it fine.
WARNING: The registry is a "dangerous" place. If you don't feel comfortable accessing it, then don't. Wait for GOG to issue a new installer which will likely exclude the compatibility flags, as this seems to be a problem for most people. I take no responsibility for you destroying your Windows installation.
Editing the Registry
Opening Regedit:

Windows XP: Start > Run Program > type "regedit" and hit enter
Vista: Starts > type in "regedit" into the search bar, hit enter
Windows 7: Search Programs and fields > "regedit"
Navigating regedit:
Regedit uses a branching structure and if you are at least somewhat competent at using computers, you shouldn't have a problem with it. We will need to delete two lines from Regedit to disable the forced compatibility on Myst.exe
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Browse through HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows NT> CurrentVersion>AppCompatFlags>Layers
Once you're at Layers, you should see a GOG/Myst line in the right pane of Regedit, select it and hit delete.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Browse through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows NT> CurrentVersion>AppCompatFlags>Layers
Once you're at Layers, you should see a GOG/Myst line in the right pane of Regedit, select it and hit delete.
Close Regedit the way you would close any other program.
Final Steps
The game will now no longer have forced compatibility, you can double check you were successful by navigating to the installation folder for Myst, right clicking the Myst exe, choosing properties, opening up the compatibility tab, and seeing if any of the fields are checked. They shouldn't be.
If they still are, uncheck them, apply,, close the properties dialogue and open it again. If they are now unchecked, you have been successful. If not, you can try restarting to force Windows to take the new registry values into account.

Hello,
Just an FYI, I downloaded Myst today (31 Dec 2009), and still had to do this fix for Windows 7 64-bit. After the fix, it worked great! Thanks.
Rich S.
Contrary to the "Solved" notation on this thread, the problem is not solved. I purchased and installed the software 1/1/10 and the problem still existed. I contacted support, but got no response.
I tried changing my compatibilty to various settings, none worked. I left it as Windows XP (service pack 2).
A search of the internet found a solution from the linux people that worked for me - stutter stopped immediately.
I installed Quicktime 6.5.2, and changed the setting for the FIFO buffer to 2000 (linux folks said 1000-2000 - I went all the way first shot):
Edit -> Preferences -> Quicktime preferences...
On the popup dialog top dropdown, pick "Sound Out" and then click the "Options..." button which brings yet another popup with an edit box for "FIFO size in millisecs" Enter 2000, click OK and close everything out.
I have now played the game all the way through with no problems - and no regedit either!
Update: I forgot to say that I am running Vista Home Premium as the OS.

Just FYI, I bought this game about a week or two ago, had to use this fix. Running XP SP3. Works like a charm now.
MME and RealMyst were both crashing for me at random points during videos. This fixed worked perfectly. Everything looks and sounds much better, too.
Real Myst runs for a few minutes then suddenly closes and I have to reopen and start back a the beginning of the game. A some points the video moves sluggish and choppy. I'm only a little bit computer literate, so regedit may bea possiblilty, but I'd reather not. I have Direct X12 and did download DirectX dia. Real Myst is Real Frustrating. I had this game years ago and it was great. This version from GOG is not. Please help
Would just like to make a quick mention in this thread that at some point when resuming my Riven playthrough I started to experience some serious stutter during the videos. This problem mysteriously remained even after a system reboot. I managed to fix it however by simply changing the compatibility mode from the default Windows 95 setting to Windows 98. Just thought I should mention in case someone else has a similar problem. This was on a Windows 7 64-bit by the way.
