I run XP 64bits tried changing compatibility, didn't work either. Played Riven with no problems. I had played Myst years ago on CD and it was crashing at the clock tower as well. I do not get the message either when I enter the number of switches (8).
Anyone has an idea on what I should do next ?? to be able to play the game...

PinkFloyd2003 seems to have solved it for at least himself.

Maybe you could try his sugestions and hopefully it works for you. Well at least the ones that will apply to you as your already on xp, like 640x480 and 256 colours.

Tkx for the info but i've tried all the configs still no intro, puzzle not working and still crashing at the clock tower! Here's my dxdiag info :
