I'm trying to play the Secret of Monkey Island - Special Edition from GOG, but every time I am not focused on the window for it... on a different monitor, or just in another window, it immediately pauses to the menu screen, so I can't listen to the game or dialogue while doing anything else on my computer.

Is there any workaround for this? I have so many copies of this game, but I wanted to play the special edition and it isn't working. I also always prefer GOG, but .... would this not happen if I used the steam version or is it inbuilt into the game itself?
