I've installed the game on a machine with a relatively fresh Windows 7 / 64 bit installation on it. I've tried running it as an administrator, and compatibility modes, but no matter what, the game quits immediately after starting. Any ideas what I could try, or where to look for a log entry that tells me what went wrong?

Thanks a lot!

Michael

EDIT: I just noticed that this forum is for the entire Monkey Island series. The game in question is The Secret of Monkey Island - Special Edition.

I'm having this problem as well. Sorry I don't have a solution, just wondering if anyone out there has a fix.

To clarify the problem, when starting TSoMI-SE, the window appears, goes white, and does nothing else. It shows up in Task Manager as "Not Responding". I've changed my Settings.ini file to have 640x480 resolution, still doesn't work.

Thanks to anyone who has an answer.
I was having the same problem. The game finally worked when I opened the properties of the game's shortcut and changed it to run in compatibility mode for 'Windows 98 / Windows Me'. I tried the Windows 7 and various Windows XP compatibility modes before that and they didn't work. I have no idea why its working with this one, but it is.

I got this solution from the generic support page on the gog forums. For general information, I tried adding the game's executable to ffdshow's exclusions list, both video and audio, which the support page suggested and that didn't work either.
Same problem for me. It just crashes when I try to launch it. Any fixes gog?

I also had the problem that the game (Monkey Island 2 SE) would not start on Windows 7 64-bit, but I got an error message: "missing xinput1_3.dll".

I got this even though DirectX 11 is installed and working according to Start menu > "dxdiag".

SOLUTION that worked for me: install DirectX 9 update from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

Very frustrating, but at least it works now for me!

My Direct X error was d3dx9_41.dll being missing. The above solution of installing Direct X 9, even though I have the newer Direct X on Windows 10, worked for me for the Tales of Monkey Island game. I swear it seems to be Direct X issues for me on every new computer when I attempt to play older games. lol

Thank you, it worked for me (4 years later actually)

Thanks, that actually worked! Kinda weird that a modern remaster requires windows 98 compatibility to run.
Something worth mentioning for whoever stumbles across this thread.

While I have no problems running the game with Windows 10 or 11 without using any compatibility mode, I had a different problem once.

I bought the game when I still had a 16:10 monitor (1920x1200).

Years later, when I switched to 1920x1080, the game would crash at startup without a error message.
The solution was to edit the "resolution" entry in the games configuration file.
"%appdata%\LucasArts\The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition\Settings.ini"

Just downloaded to play the series from the beginning since Return to Monkey Island is coming out.

Had the same issue, Secret of Monkey Island would close immediately on startup. Edited the settings.ini file to match my display resolution and that fixed it.
