DarkSith1: Greetings fellow pirates,
some of you may have bought "Escape from Monkey Island" today after its introduction to GOG, only to be confronted with an error message after trying to launch it via GOG-Galaxy:

"Could not initialize your hardware! Please refer to the Troubleshooting Guide for more information."

Now the troubleshooting guide proved to be less than helpful, but I figured out a way to launch the game anyway.

For my specs:
Win10 63bit
AMD R200 series GPU
Intel i5-4570 3,20 GHz

I don't know whether or not the specs are important; should yours vary and this fix doesn't help you, please leave a comment so we can troubleshoot as a community!

Step 1: Open the game's installation folder (Select the game in GOG Galaxy --> more --> manage installation -->
show folder).
Step 2: Find "monkey.exe"
Step 3: Right-click "monkey.exe" and select "Properties"
Step 4: Select the "Compatibility" sub-menu and check the first and last boxes. Run the programm in
compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and run as administrator.
Step 5: Run monkey.exe
Step 6: In the launcher, press [bOptions] --> Configuration Options.
Step 7: Within the "Configuration Options", switch to the "Trouble Shooting submenu and select Enable
OpenGL
. Hit Apply, then ok.
Step 8: Press "Go Back", then hit Play Monkey 4.

The game should run without the error popping up. For me, the first cutscene took a while to load but you can skip it and watch it from the game's main menu at a later time.
Thank you so much!

I found a way that works for me to fix the buggy cutscenes is to (after you've completed all the steps that you listed) to also right click on the monkey4.exe file and go to properties and make sure to set its compatibility settings to Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and run as administrator. Then launch monkey4.exe and the cutscenes should run smoothly. I haven't had a chance to test out the entire game's cutscenes but so far the first one played smoothly as well as just the way the game launched was improved.

Thank you so much for posting this solution - it really helped me out a lot!

harrispcarl: Nah i think its the 3rd monitor. Just tried it with different configs of screens. any combo works, but the moment you have all 3 on, it fails. 2 are 4k and 1 in 1080p. but it runs on all of them, as long as there isnt a 3rd monitor!
Had the same issue (3 monitors) and your solution worked for me (unplugging one of them). Thanks a lot, man!

Nitrus015: Gabro82 can you try one more thing? Terpor suggested it above, but I'm surprised to see that no-one's tried it yet.

1. Go to http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html
2. Download "dgVoodoo v2.55.2 - for regular usage (released: 07.06.2018)"
3. From that Zip, extract the files from the MS directory (D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll, DDraw.dll) to the same directory where you have Monkey4.exe. The DLL files individually, not the whole folder.
4. Extract dgVoodoo.conf and dgVoodooCpl.exe to the same directory that has Monkey4.exe

5. Make sure you're running it as Direct3D, and preferably 32bit. Disable the "-gl" and "-16" flags.
6. Run the game (through Monkey4.exe), see if it works. If it worked, you will see a dgVoodoo watermark in the lower right corner.

7. To remove the watermark, run dgVoodooCpl.exe
8. Go to the DirectX tab, uncheck the "dgVoodoo Watermark" option
I've done this and it worked. Thank you Nitrus015 and Terpor, this solution helped me a lot.
How do I get it to play in windowed mode without minimizing or disabling the in-game sound when I switch screens?
Hi there

I bought the game some days ago, and I followed all DarkSith1 instructions.
But, just after the game's opening, it crashs.
I have Windows 8.1, 64 bits
How should I do ?
Thanks

I run the game in ScummVM these days (since ResidualVM was merged into ScummVM, I use it for Monkey4, Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey).

Here's the configuration I use:
filtering=true
mute=false
datausr_load=false
renderer=opengl_shaders
engineid=grim
show_fps=false
platform=windows
shadow_effects=true
vsync=true
check_gamedata=false
camera_relative_mode=false
music_volume=177
aspect_ratio=true
guioptions=sndNoMIDI gameOption1 gameOption2 lang_English
fullscreen=true
sfx_volume=192
description=Monkey Island 4: Escape From Monkey Island (English)
speech_volume=192
path=[insert path here]
gameid=monkey4
language=en
antialiasing=16
analog_joystick_mode=true
gsl=unstable

Attention: Just as other 3D games with low hardware requirements and no fps limiter also ScummVM causes very fast graphic cards to become really hot. The solution is to limit the fps for these games using the graphic card driver. In ScummVM's case 60fps will be more than enough.

Thank you, but I have another problem.
ScummVM don't find the game.
It's a GOG Galaxy copy however.

According to the ResidualVM/ScummVM documentation you need to download and place "MonkeyUpdate.exe" into the game directory as well.

This is the content of my game directory for ScummVM (working solution)

Movies (subdirectory)
Textures (subdirectory)
MonkeyUpdate.exe
artAll.m4b
artJam.m4b
artLuc.m4b
artMel.m4b
artMon.m4b
lip.m4b
local.m4b
patch.m4b
voiceAll.m4b
voiceJam.m4b
voiceLuc.m4b
voiceMel.m4b
voiceMon.m4b

I removed all the rest, since it's not needed. I have no idea what the updated is needed for, as far as I can tell it's never executed. But it's necessary.

You can find the patch here:

Nitrus015: Credit goes to Terpor (and of course dgVoodoo) :)
I'm kicking myself for not remembering it earlier.

P.S.: dgVoodoo is more powerful than just that, I'd suggest reading the readmes too.
Is there any way to get Monkey4.exe to run under DGVoodoo's configurations without it changing the desktop resolution of whatever the primary display/monitor is?
Every time I run it (based on the previous configs given), the game itself will run properly, but it lowers the resolution of my primary monitor to 640x480 (the default resolution of the game itself).
How do I prevent that from happening and KEEP my monitor's resolution the way it is?
