When leaving the first town, I am prompted to enter an old-school manual code, ex: page 3, line 7, word 3. However, using the PDF files supplied with the game, I fail and fail again.

I've tried using the PDF page number, as well as the manual page numbers, tried lines above and below where I think they should be, ensured I am looking at the PDF in 100% zoom, as to not make some weird scaling error, and I've even been prompted to enter lines and words on pages which are soley illustrations.

After a few failures I started counting; I hit 20, and came here for help.

Are you trying to count the words from manual.pdf? There is a list of needed keywords in second file, keys_3_5.pdf.
Thank you.

I was stuck in the same section, trying to figure out how to get out of the first town.
To be more specific:

If you're looking for the .pdf with the answers to these copy protection questions, it is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Might & Magic VI Limited Edition\Might and Magic 4-5 - World of Xeen

Or wherever you installed the game (above is the default directory for windows vista).

The file you want is keys_3_5.pdf as was stated above, and it will contain the copy protection answers for III, IV, and V.
I never got that file. Instead, I spent money on an unplayable game. :(
Actually, I just found the file. It was pretty well hidden, but I found it with your help. Thank you.

Yeah, a lot of people have trouble finding it, I really think GOG should make it more clear where the keys are located. Anyway, glad you got it working, it's a great game!
I posted the keywords doc -- it contains MM3, 4, and 5.
