My level 16 party is getting chewed up by the minotaurs and eyes in Thunderfist Mountain. What level is recommended for getting through here to Nighon?
My party was slightly stronger than yours at that point, but still not higher than lvl 20, I think. The Evil Eyes are the worst because they inflict insanity from afar. I just ran through that area with invisibility. From that part onwards, everything was much tougher. I did clear the Maze, though (full of Minotaurs), but not without resorting to copious save scumming. I also avoided places like the Land of the Giants, or any place where my characters could get utterly killed by a single blow, while I couldn't make more a dent to the enemies.
I often run through at a fairly weak level with invisibility. Even that is pretty difficult sometimes when you find an enemy blocking the way you need to go or something, so save often!

Then, later in the game go back through and clear it out if you wish, although I remember the loot in there being surprisingly poor for the level of difficulty.
Thanks for the info. Means I am going to have to backtrack and go find the invisibility spell. I swear, this game is misnamed. Instead of MM7: For Blood and Honor, it ought to be called MM7: The Search for Trainers. I don't even remember what the plot line is any more. I spend all my time hunting trainers, promotion quests, and spells.

LOL. I absolutely LOVE the Might and Magic games, but I have felt the exact same way before.

That's why I like it, actually. Not because of searching for trainers specifically, but because it's nice playing an RPG where you're just plopped down and told to do whatever, without feeling like you're blowing off stopping the end of the world.

Keep in mind that the location of Trainers is kept in your Autonotes, and lower tier Trainers can tell you about higher ones.
I've gotten through Thunderfist Mountain at level 5, without invisibility. It did require some save-scumming to make sure that there were no Minotaur Headsmen or Lords right outside the exit from Nighon Tunnels, but I found it pretty easy to dodge the Eyes' beams, even if there are some Evil Eyes in the mix.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a tome of Town Portal from the Master Water Guild in Bracada, making sure your Wizard is of sufficient skill to learn Master Water Magic, and making him/her learn Master Water Magic from the trainer in Mount Nighon.

Why? Just out of curiosity. Is there any particular advantage to getting to Nighon that early? Or is it more for the challenge?

There are some high-level items lying around, if you're willing to dodge some ranged attacks and flee some melee.

I'd put all my money in the bank before travelling to Nighon, then grab the items and let the monsters kill me. Boom, back in Harmondale.
Getting to use Town Portal, with Master Water Magic, is a pretty good reason for trying to reach Nighon as early in the game as possible, and there is also Master Bow out there. Getting Town Portal early will save you a lot of time in the long run, which will increase your score at the end of the game, and Master Bow gives you two shots for every attack which is like having a second archer or ranger.
Actually, now that I've played through this part again, the distance between Nighon Tunnels and Mount Nighon is rather short, with barely half a dozen enemies in your way. You can buff your party and make a run for it, or try to squeeze your way through the tunnels with Invisibility. In any case, Master Water and thief trainers will make an early trip there worth your while. Not to mention it's usually the last tavern for the ArcoMage challenge.
Level 40 is good to shoot for in my opinion, if you want to fight through everything, but still beware the minotaur lords because they can kill a character instantly regardless of level or hit points. Try to keep your distance from them, at all costs, and hit them with ranged attacks and spells.
The tactic that got me through most difficult fights, including Thunderfist and the Maze, was to use the Enslave spell or Berserk, its lesser variant, and let the minotaurs kill each other, allowing me to pick on the single (and fairly weakened) monster that remained of a small group.
Here's a youtube video of a run through to Land of the Giants using two invisibility scrolls.

Doesn't quite reach the final door but you get the idea.
IMO the best way to travel and fight there is to bring a Priest of Light or Dark to avoid the death effect.
