Running under Win 10 Pro. Intel 5th Gen NUC, so no sound card, just their built-in.

Used Grayface's patch, and it definitely helps stability. The problem is, I can't control the stupid background sound...the violin theme is *extremely* annoying, and in fact disruptive to my play. I can't even turn down its volume; it's constant, no matter how I tweak any of the 3 sliders. (The char voices do, and the weapons sounds do; just not the stupid background junk.)

Disabling D3D audio has no effect.
In the mm7.ini file, I have NoCD = 1; that seems mandatory. I've tried both PlayMP3=1 and =0, and it doesn't help. MusicLoopCount =0 or =1 doesn't seem to matter, either...but I'm so sick of the *(@#$ violins that maybe I'm not waiting long enough.

But I want them GONE. I know I can't just rename the music folder; instant crash.

On a related note, can I change the 'personality' after startup? My sorcerer has that *(@#$@#$ WHINY personality. "Its just a scratch, but I need it fixed!" GAH! Want to kill the stupid bitch myself. :) Can that be tweaked with, say, one of the game editors?

Thank you for your time
I found the music in that tutorial island place was really loud as well but after that it was fine, with the grayface patch the music should no longer keep looping so the song should end after about 3 minutes.

Also yes you can choose the voice of your character before you start a game, I find some of the voices in mm7 really annoying. mostly the ones the wine a lot -_-
Have you tried deleting mp3 files themselves, rather than the whole folder?

If that crashes too, then just get an empty mp3 file and replace the music files with it (or at least the ones you don't want to hear). That should work.

Yes, you can change *before* you start...but what about after?

ZFR...yeah, I suppose I can just use an MP3 editor and play with everything that way. Cut it off after 10 seconds...that way, it can maybe catch your attention...hey, something changed here...but it'll go away. Still, that's a hack, to be sure.
By the way, in my GOG copy without Grayface patch, the music volume slider in Controls does work. So it seems it's the patch that changed its behaviour.

Use this editor:
http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/pc/mm7/editors.shtml
(the first one, called Might and Magic 7 Character Editor (v 3.00). The file is called mm7che.exe)

The character sound is tied to the face portrait. So if you change the portrait of the character, the sounds change too.

that's true in mm6 but in mm7 the arrow on the bottom changes the portrait and the arrow on top changes the voice, you just can't change the gender of the voice but the voice is not tied to a portrait

In mm7che, it looks like they're linked...just click on the portart and it looks to be cyclying through.

For the music, yeah, I just trimmed down a few of the files...then got tired of that, and said the heck wiith it, I just copied one trimmed file and used it to replace ALL of them. For information, deleting the files does NOT work; it will crash. I didn't try an empty file; that may or may not work. The issue might be, if it tries to load the file, AND if it's checking the status of the return, in trying to convert the file into a data stream...with an empty file, the conversion should return an error. But, you could always use just some really quiet passages, if you don't mind *some* background
Did anyone get this issue solved? I would like to turn off the game music, but it won't allow it.

Any suggestions?

There are a few suggestions in the thread, as well as things that were tried and did not work.

Hia,

Yes I did read the thread before I posted. As the last reply was from 2 years ago, I had hoped someone might've found a solution. I can remember myself replacing one of the music files with blank noise, but the game didn't accept it and had to re-install :).

So, I'm looking for new ideas, other suggestions :).

Looking forward to solutions!

One of the suggestions was to try getting a really quiet sound file, and use that to overwrite all the music files.

The music doesn't bother me, so I haven't tried any of these solutions myself.
I just moved all the.mp3's into a folder and created blank ones named 2.mp3 through 20.mp3 and it works fine. No music.
guys u have to download GRAYFACE patch i can give u the link and it work good, u can control music. so music is 1 time, no restart ( if u want just save and load ) and so when u go in a building, music keep going good ! :D
and when u play in softwar, u have the good monster's colors ! no " all monster in red" but the real one <3
only last one problem. "sound on feets" are here but low.
so with gog and grayface, all is good. just sound of footsteps are "missing". they are here but low so its quite good :D
if u find a solution tell us :D
keep strengh dudes we will win ! ! !
Here is blank music files, if someone need it
https://yadi.sk/d/WD8qV6jViXDwCw (30Kb)

How to use:
Replace all mp3 in "Might and Magic 7\Music\" with blank (silent) ones from the archive.
Don't replace track 14.mp3, if music in menu is needed

This method works with M&M6 and M&M8 too.

In the game Options, there are 3 sound settings:
What controles the volume of music is not 'Music volume', but 'Sound volume' above.

You can try that too:
