Training Grounds at New Sorpigal will level me up to 9 for 72 gold.
Royal Gymnasium at Castle Ironfist will level me up to 9 for 216 gold.

Is there any benefit to paying triple the price at Castle Ironfist? Of all the earlier games, MM2 was the only one where you paid more at better towns, but it was worth it because you gained more HP. Is this the case here, or do better towns charge more for training because they can?

There's no difference in training quality.
You will eventually discover that the early towns can only train you up to a certain level, so later on you're forced to use the more expensive training grounds.

Sorpigal will take you to 15 I believe and Iron Fist to 200 if you can get that far
