ioticus: Hidden extensions was the problem. The patch works great. Thanks!
You're welcome. I'm glad that was it because I was running out of ideas. :)

Avantgarde: Thank you sir.
Now I know what I do this weekend :-)

adambiser: You're welcome, though I think it'll take more than a weekend. :D I'm still in the process of playing MM1, though sadly, I haven't had a lot of time to play it lately.
Finished the game yet?

I did finish it, though I didn't finish all of the quests and I did end up using a walkthrough to guide me. It just started dragging out.... :(

How about you?

Yay! Just found this topic... the timed messages are not that imporant though? Except for determining whether/why did my spell fail (*combat only*, *done*, *magic doesn't work here* etc...)

How is it that a game so simple and old prevents me from turning off my PC? Magic...

Sometimes the timed message are quite important. For example, when examining the statues in Sorpigal (the first town) there are messages which give clues as to what to do. But these message fly by too quickly to read if you don't have the patch. Also there are some instances where someone will give your party a quest and you won't be able to read what the quest was as the text goes by too fast. So I definitely recommend using this patch.

Played for about 10 hours. Been busy with work. But I will soon continue with this game :-)
BTW this thread should be sticky!

adambiser: Here it is. Change the extension from JPG to EXE and it should work.
Original filename: MM_I_text_speed_patch.exe
This works. Thanks! +1

Qbix: dosbox 0.74 should help as well.
Set the cycles around 1800 (I think)
and run the game
Text should be displayed at a much better speed.
I've ran it as low as 800. It plays just as it did when the game originally was released

oldschool: I've ran it as low as 800. It plays just as it did when the game originally was released
The problem with the cycles setting is that it depends on one's processor speed, so there's never any one universal setting that will work for everyone. When I was playing MM1, lowering the cycles allowed me to read the text but also introduced significant delays on input (I'm talking a half-second between pressing a key and it registering in the game) which was really aggravating. Although I was using DOSBox 0.72, as 0.74 hadn't been released yet.

Still, I advocate the patch, since it resets the text speed for everyone regardless of their hardware, and lets players set cycles to whatever setting they want to get the performance they desire from the game.

It's worth noting that none of the other games in the pack have this text speed problem, including MM2, which ran fine without any modifications (or cycles settings).
Hi Guys, I have to say that even with 0.74 version and the patch, text was still too fast(and is not like im a slow reader...) so I still had to decrease the cycles to 500. But to be honest I think 750 should do, but anytime I press Ctrl+F11 or F12, it just change 500 up or down, how to go up or down a bit less?

Thanks!

Open dosbox.conf file in notepad or any text editor. You can change the settings there. Let me know if you need more help.

that worked, thanks!
No matter what I do it still doesn't work.
it is now a .exe and still does nothing for me.
Run it as an admin, nothing.

EDIT:
ok I fixed my own problem,
I was putting the patch file in the MM1 folder in my desktop, not where the MM1.exe was.
Problem solved, everything is now readable

Anyone could reupload this patch, please?
