They can each turn a whole bunch of my guys into stone in 1 round and I don't know the stone to flesh spell yet...
Unfortunately, I don't think there is. It's possible that there's some item you can find if you're lucky that will help a little, but nothing reliable. I just avoided such areas until I learned the stone to flesh spell.

If you do survive the fight, though, you can bring your stone characters to a temple to have them cured.
Jeez! By the time I'll learn the spell, the reward from Lord Hacker will be so pathetic that I won't care. (It's a low exp reward even now at level 8)

Where's a good place to get experience and good QUESTS at my level?

Where have you been already? Each of the castles will give out quests, so be sure to check them all (except for Castle Dragadune, which is in ruins). There are also a few quests you can get elsewhere in the world. What are the main places you haven't explored yet?

The statues in Sorpigal mention some general quest-like things you can do, but most of those you won't be able to finish until you're a little higher level. They do generally have nice experience rewards though. There are a few special places you can visit to get some extra experience too, but I don't want to spoil anything specific, unless you ask me to.

EDIT - Just to be sure you know, you can use the "remove quest" spell to remove the quest from Lord Hacker so that you can accept quests from other lords.

Yes, I know about Remove quest, and I did visit most of the lords (all except lord alamar, I think)

Lord Ironfist's next quest for me requires to discover the secret of portsmith, but apparently I need a teleport spell for that. (EDIT: apparently not! the lower left wall from her can be walked through)

Lord Hacker's, bring him the head of a medusa, and that was what I was trying to do today before the basilisks stopped me in my tracks.

Lord inspectron, I think I did 4 or 5 of his quests

Yeah you can do that without teleport. But it's tough. I learned much later that once you find the secret, you can try to run away rather than win the subsequent battle, and that's good enough to solve the quest. Of course, you can't always escape, so you may have to try it a few times. The battle is very hard so running is recommended.

Have you been to the desert yet? There's some good stuff to find there. Might be a good next step for your party.
Yes, I managed to beat the quest by running away, too.

I've been to the desert. I have the map, I did a few errands in Dusk, and the nearby Dragadune castle, but not much else.

I think I'm gonna advance on the main quest. My progress in that one is that I just obtained the Ruby Whistle.

If you're looking for experience, there's a very useful place to visit in Castle Dragadune. In fact, I think one of the lords will quest you to find it, so if you haven't gotten that quest yet, it's worth seeking out. My memory is that you get the quest from one of the lords near Erliquin... not Hacker, the other one (forget his name at the moment). His quests generally ask you to find various places in the world.

A good idea also, although I'm not sure you're high enough level to fully tackle the next step. But it would be a good place to get experience and loot... get in a few fights, then retreat to save, etc. Try it out and see how you fare! I might be biased as I was higher level when I tried it so I was getting tougher enemies in the random encounters. You might be fine.
