I've noticed a lot of people having trouble with freezing and such in this old game. There are a fair number of threads here as well, but none really helped with all the issues I was having. Loading screen freezes, menu screen freezes, the game not running in full screen... it made the game a real pain to try and enjoy. And finding repeated dead old links to potential fixes didn't help either. But, then I found this video by Strategy House...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKvizNWI-PQ

Over there is a quick three minute video that addresses everything I was experiencing, with four links to the files needed to fix them. It all worked. Every issue I had was taken care of and the game now runs smoothly. But, for those not interest in going to YouTube and watching it...

http://www11.zippyshare.com/v/F9XnVDBd/file.html - The loading screen freeze fix. Copy the files into your "Data" folder and overwrite the files.

http://www11.zippyshare.com/v/BK7qPZyK/file.html - The fix for when you transfer from the 3D game world to the 2D menus. Just drop it into your "Data" folder and overwrite the file.

http://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/6-might-and-magic-ix-fullscreen-fixes/ - The fullscreen fix. Just run the "install.bat" file after you unzip the package and your game will be full screen.

http://www11.zippyshare.com/v/Y7mZbV8X/file.html - A random game freeze fix. Just drop the cfg file into the game's installation folder (the one with the "mm9.exe" file).

And that about covers it. Kudos to Strategy House for gathering everything up and making fresh links for people to grab the needed files.

I actually had a nice conversation with this guy in the comments section of that video. It fixes ALMOST everything. The problem is, many people are still dealing with the issue of the screen going pitch black at night and underwater. I've scoured every corner of the internet that has ever discussed technical issues of Might and Magic IX and tried every possible combo of solutions, and nothing works. It's immensely frustrating, and I hope someday soon someone comes up with a solution.

First off for the GOG admins, bring us back here when we sign up please. And secondly, these links lead to a ton of spyware nonsense and require a lot of workaround to download 3 of the 4, I'd suggest extreme care at Zippyshare, it aint the old zippy anymore.

And GOG how dare you sell us a game that needs so many fixes... shame.

GOG is selling the game the way it originally published. They include the latest official patches, but if they start bundling fan-made fixes it would open a huge can of worms. Not the least of which are legal problems since you can't just commercially sell stuff others made, technical problems since those fixes might not be fully tested on all systems and GOG wouldn't be able to offer support for them, and complaints from fans who'd argue which is the best version that GOG should sell and purists who'd want the original version. The other alternative is not to sell such a "broken" game at all, but that would bring complaints too. So GOG only includes fan-made patches in extreme cases, and in others provides links to them in the forum, which frankly is the best solution. And there is always the money-back guarantee if the game can't work on your system.

Your complaint shouldn't be directed to GOG but to developers/the orginal publishers. Shame on them for releasing such an unfinished product.

This......actually works. You just need to put the dll files mentioned in this section into the MM9 install folder. The worst I can say about it is that occasionally you may have to use the task manager to force quit when you exit the game, but this absolutely (FINALLY) solves the water issue. Unreal.

On a side note, this particular post really needs to be a sticky.

I have taken all the files from above PLUS the necessary files from dgvoodoo2 and uploaded them in a zip folder at this link. This combo should eliminate all problems with MM9 going forward. Thanks to everyone who helped out with this over the years. It has been a stupid little personal quest of mine to get this game to function properly, and I think this finally does it:

The gog version comes preinstalled with an unofficial patch called TELP.

Yes. It's one of the few cases where GOG did add an unofficial patch.

Oh my God guys, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. I spent the whole Friday and Saturday today on trying to find a solution for the black screen at night and underwater. I approached Ubisoft on forums, social media, sent them tickets - 0 solutions from they- they even told me so tediously to reinstall my graphic drivers.... and here when I lost all hope that I can continue my passionate journey through the Might and Magic RPG series you guys pop up!

I feel like giving you guys a man hug from the tears of joy that I've got in my eyes right now! Thanks to you I regained hope in humanity and that there are passionate people out there who do not let thinks just slip away easily.

I logged in to write this first post ever of mine only to let you know guys how much I appreciate finding this little gem of a solution, and this thread in general!

Thank to them. Now they should include the ComprehensiveFixPack too.
These patches work well. The only frustrating thing is they "correct" the Training Hall's respawn time, so you can't run through there over and over to collect artifacts without doing the minisaves edit, which is annoying.
GOG use to add unnoficial patches when the game was broken at launch in its vanilla state even with official patches, only if the gameplay is not changed too much and if the fixes objetivelly "fix" them.

I have in mind this game and vampire bloodlines. The latter comes with another unnoficial patch in its basic form without gameplay addings. Or Temple of elemental evil that coes with a special dll based on a very popular unnoficial patch as well.

In other cases the solution is to have a switchable mod like deus ex does. But I do not remember any other cases.

Oh I didn't know about ToEE and VTB, what kind of things do the patches that GOG added fix? I actually own both games (only ToEE on GOG though), so I'm curious.

Basically both game patches fix things in stability crashes and glitches but I do not remember what they fix extensively. Their complete counterparts do apply more things like "restored" content, things that were not added originally, places, quests probably etc...

There are other games like thief and system shock also with special or more convinient versions applied, but they are special because they are not patches in the sense of the word but "ports" or new engines that make the games run better and in a more advanced way under new operating systems.
