Dear Ubisoft,

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE abandon the boring generic fantasy world of Ashan and go back to an NWC-style universe with a fantasy/sci-fi blend.

Oh, and don't screw it up.

Respectfully,

^ What he said!

Still, excited though. After all these years
I do like the poster they made out of various icons from the previous installments.
I won't hold my breath. It will probably be "more cool" for todays kids. Nothing like the NWC era rpg's. However I really want to be wrong on this one.
I agree with what everyone else has said in this thread, after MM9 and Dark Messiah, there's pretty low chance of another game in the caliber of 1-8.

Also, anyone else notice the typo in the page title? "Migh & Magic"

MMIX was produced by 3DO while the company was in its death throes. If it had been given enough time and enough money to complete the work, it may have been really nice. Dark Messiah is the one produced by Ubisoft, who had lots of money and resources and no love or understanding of the Might and Magic series.

I respectfully disagree. The GOG version of M&M 9 is alot of fun, at first I was put off by the game, but I decided to give it another try after a few years. As for Dark Messiah, I loved the viceral combat. I know it was an action game, but it was a very good one imo.

But iirc it was so a bad game that GOG had to include the big fan-patch (and usually GOG does not include those), it's actually not the official released 3DO version...:
GOG version may be fun, but Shloulet is right.

That's true. To be honest, I'm being a little unfair judging MM9, as I've never finished it. The game was too buggy and the interface didn't work as nicely as the older games, so I never got round to finishing it.
I understand why it was bad though, as you say 3DO was having some trouble at the time and IIRC it was rushed and was also the only game in the series not done by Jon Van Caneghem.

I also agree completely about Dark Messiah, which is why I have low hopes for this potential MMX.
The guys at the official Might and Magic twitter are throwing huge things around though. "Hands-on at Pax East"; posting pictures of MM3 and Worlds of Xeen etc

(In regards to the pictures) "MORE IS TO COME!"

this is generally getting me excited peeps. Damn.

I've got a bad feeling about this and i'll be extremely disappointed if "MMX" was a throwback to MM3-5, i'd rather get a DA / NWN type of game than a bunch of static 2d images and blocky maps, we're not in the early 90s anymore.

Not trying to say that older M6M were bad, they were great for their time (and still enjoyable now) but it's time to move forward.

I think a throwback to MM3-5 is extremely unlikely. I'm guessing something more along the lines of MM6-8, but with a more modern engine. But who knows? If they went back to grid-based, turn-based gameplay but included really nice graphics, a la Legend of Grimrock, that could be pretty awesome. I guess we just have to wait for the announcement to learn more.

It will almost certainly tie in to the Heroes of Might and Magic series in some way too, much like MM6 did (probably the later ones too, but I actually haven't played 7-9).
I was just thinking of Legend of Grimrock and I agree that I would love a Might and Magic game in that style, although with more mobility and open world accessibility ;)

I doubt Ubisoft would think they can compete with some of the biggest RPGs of the last couple of years cause that would be silly (even though Skyrim was merely OKAY and I disliked Dragon Age very much). They could make a fantastic product that would definitely please the oldschool fans if they put the effort into it :) Maybe it won't even be a full on title but more budget one (like Grimrock for example, that would be awesome!)

You're kidding, right?

A high-def, hand-drawn, beautifully animated throwback in the style of MM3-5 would be exactly what the doctor ordered. Heck, even a Legend of Grimrock style would be awesome.

While it would be interesting to see them try and pull off something like a huge, big-budget Dragon Age style game, it's more likely for something in that vein to be overproduced, watered down, and pandering to the least common denominator of gamers. Big budget products simply have to make a play for big returns on the investment.

By contrast, a smaller-budget title that unabashedly embraces the series' roots and makes a big play for old-school fans will be more likely to be the sort of game I'll want to play and also have more leeway to do something new and interesting.

The "hands on" comment was in reply to someone asking about the new Heroes 6 expansion. That doesn't mean MMX won't also be hands on, but there certainly hasn't been a confirmation of that.
