Installing Might and Magic VIII, I could not launch the game. Launching a default install gives me the "D3DRend -> Init Failed" error. That's not great, but acceptable, because what I really want to do is play the 6+7+8 merge.

Launching either the merge or launching unmerged MM8 with the GrayFace patch gives me a different error - "Init - Failed to create front buffer." Searching for this error online gives me nothing useful. Common compatibility fixes haven't helped. Different desktop resolutions haven't helped. Reinstalling DirectX stuff hasn't helped. Do I have any hope?

I'm running Windows 10 on a laptop.

edit: It worked on restart, a solution that somehow slipped my mind. I'm dumb. I don't know how to delete threads, so we'll just let this stand as a testament to my dumbassitude.
