Hello,

I'm new here, just purchased the GOG 2.0 Might & Magic Series today and was real excited about playing this game again. I've only installed MM6 so far, however, I can't get it to run on my laptop which is Windows 8.1.

I've read through several forum posts and have installed the GreyFace patch 1.11.2, but still no luck. When I start the game it initially kicks off, but then minimizes. I can hear the sound playing, but it won't display. It appears to be running in Windows mode instead of fullscreen like I recall from when I played it years ago. If I click the window in the taskbar, the screen flashes black, but then immediately minimizes again, sound continues to play.

A few things to note that are likely involved:
Windows 8.1 (GOG indicates Windows 8 is compatible, is 8.1 not?)
Resolution - my native resolution is 3200x1800 and lowest possible resolution is 1024x768. If I recall this ran 640x480... is that my issue? and if so am I out of luck?
I tried to install DX9, but it won't install on Windows 8.1.

Are there any ini settings I can specify to get this to run and work?
Will I likely have the same issues with the rest of the series?


Some additional things I've tried

set desktop shortcut to Run as Administrator
Tried Windows XP and Windows 7 compatibility modes
Tried the 640x480 shortcut option
Tried resetting my resolution to 1280x960

Despite those options I'm still only getting audio with window immediately minimizing.

You should try an earlier compatability, eg. Win 95 or 98.

Yea, it's completely compatible with 8.1--I'm running it under Win10TPx64 as we speak. I use the mm6.exe -1024x768 switch in the games executable icon...that's the highest res the game will run, IIRC. But first you need to apply the latest Greyface patch for the game. The game runs for me just fine under Win8.1/10TPx64 with *no* compatibility modes set except RunasAdmin.

The reason you cannot install DX9 is because you are using the wrong install executable...you are using the web installer version, dxwebsetup.exe, which will not do anything...;) THe correct file to run is the dxsetup.exe DX9.0c installer from the JUNE 2010 release of the DX9.0c runtime which is the last version of DX9 Microsoft released. WIthout DX9.0c installed the game simply won't run on many systems. You need it installed not just for this game, but for any older d3d game you install and want to play. Good luck!

So is there a specific place to get those drivers? I'm having the same problem, except I get a fullscreen black screen with nothing but sound, and the only thing related to the drivers I can find from Microsoft is the websetup that doesn't work.
