MMX is linear until Chapter 2 when the entire world become accessible.

The world is indeed much smaller and railroaded than MM 4-5.

The 3D graphics are amazing for a turn based grid game, you could not ask more for a game of this genre. I prefer the old school 2D graphics for games, but the art direction in this one is excellent. But inventory graphics and character sheets are not very good (MM7 was the peak of the series in this regard). Also character voices (barks) are ridiculous, whoever conceived them should be banned forever from computer game industry.

If you prefer the pure turn based combat over the RT/TB hybrid abomination of MM6-8 then this has the best combat of the series. The turn based combat of MM 3-5 was quite minimalist, this one feels a bit more strategic. With so many special abilities and spells, you really have to think in some difficult battles unless you are going to be thrashed. Also it's more difficult than the predecessors.

MM3-5 are still better overall and more charming, and you can't really compare this with 6-9 since it doesn't try to relate to them, but it shows it was made with passion and true to the spirit of the game. With a bigger world, a better story and more role-playing choices, this could have been a masterpiece.
