I've seen some walkthroughs/faqs/character-creation guides and some claim that the front character gets hit the most (I suppose "front character" means the left-most?). But in my experience, I can hardly say that's true. Also, official manual doesn't mention it. In MM7, it also seems that the party member order matters for bowmen - as the arrow flies from the left, middle or right, depending on the position. But that's about all I noticed.

So, could you please tell me more about the order of party members, particularly in MM6, MM7 and MM8? Thanks!
Some monsters prefer to hit certain classes or races. Most people in MMVII complain that their clerics get too much unwanted attention, while their main tank feels neglected, regardless of the character order.

Party order does not matter in six, seven, or eight. It matters in the earlier games, though.

The default cleric is a dwarf, which a lot of monsters hate. Also, many evil or undead monsters hate clerics.

Thanks guys for the info. But the party order still matters when it comes to the bowmen and spells, right? I remember shooting the wall with my leftmost and rightmost characters while the middle one would be able to hit monsters.

Yes, that would explain it. Seems like dwarven clerics can't take a break. :) I don't know about bowmen, though.
In Might and Magic 1-2, party order is very important, because some of the party will be in range to use melee weapons against the monsters, but typically not all of it.

In Might and Magic 3-5, the two party members furthest to the left are relevant to the Bash command, but I do not think party order matters in any other way. So put the characters with the best Might on the left side.

In Might and Magic 6-9, party order does not matter at all (except that, yes, when the leftmost character uses an arrow/spell it will start from the left area of the screen, and so on.)

Thank you a lot! That's exactly what I wanted to know. :-)
The only monsters that really hate dwarves are goblins and trolls, which are only really problematic in Harmondale and Tatalia. And there's no real need to fight the trolls in Tatalia.

That explains so much! I used the dwarf cleric, and in Harmondale, she was pretty much the one and only target. I suppose in a way it made it easy to know who to give all the best armor and whatnot to.
Didn't know monsters had racial or class "hate".

There are a few other monsters that target specific classes/races. The elves in The Tulerian Caves will target any humans in your party. Most everyone in Fort Riverstride will target elves. (This makes sense, considering humans and elves are on the brink of war with each other when you tackle these dungeons.)

I believe shades, spectres and ghosts target clerics more often than other characters. Also, dwarves in Stone City and Nighon Tunnels target goblins, but they are never hostile to you unless you attack them first.

I remember in one of the towers in MM5 there is a chest which requires a password to open. It will default to using the left-most party member, so I had to move my thief into position 1 to successfully open the chest (even with the correct password).

Fortunately, it is easy to swap positions.
