Because I have fought 13 encounters, not including the ones in the endless encounter hallway, and the crazy wizard refuses to acknowledge it. If so, then I'll just have to do it after another level or so (I'm level 6).
OK.

PetrusOctavianus: OK.
That's bloody helpful. If you're being snide because I wasn't clear enough, I will clarify:

I'm doing the Crazed Wizard Quest, in the Crazed Wizard Dungeon He tells me "Encounter the 13 and win." I've been fighting in small forays, going back to Sorpigal to save periodically. UI have fought all 13 of the fixed encounters. the Wizard refuses to acknowledge what I did, so I was asking "Do I need to do this all in one go without going up to town to save, or can I go back up to save, for the Wizard to accept I did his bloody quest?"

If I have to get more basic than that, then we have a problem here :P
Yeah, you have to do them all at one time. There are thirteen monster spawn points throughout the dungeon, and you have kill all the monsters in those places. Ten of them are in rooms, and at dead ends. The last three are in the "Corridor of Endless Encounters". From the sign, use the "Jump" spell to move forward two squares. Step forward one, and defeat the first encounter. Jump again from there, and step forward for the second encounter. Jump a third time, and step forward TWO squares for the third encounter. Lastly, Jump from there one more time to reach the Crazed Wizard.

If you have found all ten encounters in the dungeon, he will reward you!

As a side note, the Corridor is a great way to earn xps; the monsters keep coming! 8)

Hope this helps!

It does, and thanks! I did figure it out though: I tromped back to the dungeon to give that a go while waiting for replies, and it paid off. I appreciate your reply :)
Glad I could help! 8)

Might and Magic 1 is still one of my favorite games after all these years, but sometimes you have to get tough with it. Good job whipping those monsters into shape!

This forum is actually for the whole Might and Magic series, games 1-9, so it helps a lot to mention which game you're asking about. If the forum was MM1 only, then we could probably have figured it out from your first post, but since it's for all 9 games we did need a little more info.

Anyway, glad you were able to get the answer you were looking for. In general, in MM1, everything resets whenever you leave an area. The only thing that's saved when you save your game are your character stats, items, and active quest, if any (by active quest I mean the type of quest that can be removed by casting the "remove quest" spell). Other kinds of quests are only tracked by items; for example, if you have a quest to deliver something, then the game remembers this because your party is carrying that item. In practice this means that many quests can be repeated, and usually partial progress is not saved.

Actually, now that I wrote that I realize that there are a few exceptions to this, usually for tasks that require visiting multiple areas. But most of the time it's true.
I have the same problem as the OP. In MM1's Crazed Wizard Cave, I complete all 13 encounters in one go and talk to the wizard but he just gives me the "Encounter the 13, win the prize!" response. I tried exiting the dungeon and re-doing it, but no change, still the same message. I am resting in between some of the fights. Does that reset it?

Do I have to talk to the wizard first, then do the encounters?

Nevermind I see a solution here: http://www.gog.com/forum/might_and_magic_series/mm1_crazed_wizard_cave_question

Incidentally, is there a way to search for just MM1 posts in this forum? When I tried searching with "mm1" it comes up empty.
As a related question to this topic; how does one get through the corridor of endless encounters to reach the wizard? I started down the corridor, and did at least 15 encounters until i was running low on food, i turned around and saw that I had only moved three spaces. Do you need to have levitate on? Or jump over certain squares along the corridor? This was disheartening because i'd already cleared every other encounter in the cave. Any advice is appreciated!

You have to jump over the encounters.

Each encounter pushes you back 1 square, which is why they are endless.
