I have an alienware laptop with win 10. I can't get MM9 to start up. I can see a small, minimized black screen that eventually goes away. I have disconnected my headset as someone suggested to no avail. I have tried compatibility to no availl. I am not using multiple monitors but only my laptop monitor. I even tried loading it without my antivirus being active to no avail Anyone know how to get the game to start up? HELP

You may want to try using dgVoodoo2 as a graphics API wrapper.

Installation instructions:
- Download the latest release from here and extract the archive;
- Enter the MS\x86 directory and then copy the D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll files;
- Paste these files into the game installation folder (where the game executable is);
- (OPTIONAL) Run the included dgVoodooCpl program in order to configure the wrapper's settings.

You probably did this already, but make sure that every single cable is disconnected from your laptop so that only the power cord is in, then try again.

The guy who found the headset-connection-bug also said that it was gog tech support that found out about it. Worth a try.

Having similar problems with 8. Definitely got to figure out why Linux isn't picking up my ethernet and wifi, and get that fixed so I can actually run games again. Win10 is the least stable, most incompetently made OS in the history of OSes. Linux + WINE actually works and lets these games run without issue; ran through 6 last year and got pretty far in the Merge mod before my old Linux box got blew up by lightning.

My bad. I edited my previous post.

The problem is that Windows makes no effort in being retro-compatible with previous versions of DirectX APIs, while Wine has mainly problems with the latest releases of DirectX.
I have the little black box for 1 second issue too, and dxvoodoo didn't help at all. I also don't have a headset to disable, so that can't be it. "lithtech.exe" doesn't even have an entry in my dxdiag as well. Everything I have tried results in the same thing, a little black box that appears, then disappears after about 1 second. I'm starting to think I'm just one of the unlucky few who's setup is just wrong enough for the thing to not work.

Win 10 Pro 64 bit
Intel i7 10700K
RTX 2060 Super 8GB
16GB ram
Unfortunately, I'm having the same issue, even after trying the dgVoodoo libraries.

On Linux, I have even more bizarre graphics issues (game runs, but most characters and objects don't show up, and instead project their textures onto the background geometry of the level).
Updating this one too. I actually finally found the cause of the game not working for me.

Here's what I did and the game starts right up no problems, but it could always be different for you:

Go to control panel, then click "Device Manager"

In the device manager, open the "Human Interface Devices" section

Disable "HID - compliant Device" driver

The game should now run ok.

Again that's what worked for me but this info needs to be passed along for those still having issue.
