I have:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Core i5-4670 CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs)
8GB RAM
DirectX 11
GTX 760 (shader model 5 I think, though it's hard to know for sure)
Various Microsoft 64-bit C++ Redistributables installed:
- 2005 (x64) 8.0.56336
- 2010 (x64) 10.0.40219
- 2012 (x64) 11.0.61030.0
- 2013 (x64) 12.0.30501.0
Fully up to date with Windows Updates, including "optional/recommended" updates.

The internet suggests various "install this to fix anything!" solutions. Yeah, that's not happening.

I've reinstalled the 2012 redistributable, rebooted, reinstalled the game, run chkdsk c: /f /r, no luck so far.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like a possible 64bit/32bit DLL problem. Which kind of is plausible since this is a 64bit game.

Is there maybe a 64bit driver or DirectX component missing somewhere?
Thank you very much!

That thread led me to Dependency Walker. It's been a few years since I had to drag that out - should have thought of it earlier...

Everything was 64-bit except for xinput1_3.dll which was 32-bit.

I googled "xinput1_3.dll 64 bit", and downloaded a new copy from here:
http://originaldll.com/file/xinput1_3.dll/16337.html

Dropped it into the game folder and ... solved!

Don't know why this has happened. Being Windows 7 and DirectX 11, it will have been installed via Windows Update - and that's usually pretty reliable.

Thank you again.
