There’s been a bit of a debate on whether or not you should play these versions or use an emulator. Personally I have no qualms using emulators or fan patches. Use whatever works for you. That being said this is my favorite version of the game to play and I’d like to share some details as to why.

For first time players the best way to play MGS1 is on real hardware, there’s just no other way around it. But for people who’ve replayed the game many time I’d say this version is pretty good.

I am fully aware that this versions has it’s problems such missing affects and deluge but, let me break it down for you.

I first played MGS when I was 12 but I had to wait until I was 15 before I could continue due to the adult themes of the game.

When I got a PS2 I tried to play MGS1 on it. Only to discover that not only could I not run the VR mission disc but upon finishing the game it would crash preventing me from from assessing new game plus. (this was a common issue with PAL PS2s for those of you wandering)

Also MGS1 in particular has always been a bitch to emulate. Constant problems with sound and graphics. It doesn’t matter if the PSX version has better sound if you get crackling and muted audio.

In short this is the best way to play on in the PC and it is also hassle free compared to trying to run it any other way. To run it at full speed I suggest running it on 640x480 through the game setting and up scaling it through the DX configuration. I tried the widescreen patch and it caused framerate problems when I was using the Stealth Camo, even if I was playing on 640x480. So I’ll be sticking with GOG’s DX wrapper. I really can’t express my gratitude to GOG for this one.

MGS 1 is a game that means a lot to me but it is also filled with a lot of obstacles. First I had to wait until I was 15, then I ran into problems getting it to work on my PS2, then I ran into further problems trying to run it on my PC back in the day. Then I tried to emulate it which had even more problems. Eventually I tried to emulate integral which had even more problems.

Many similar issues also apply to MGS 2 as well.

Thanks to GOG I am now able to play one of my childhood favorite games without headache. It’s not perfect but I don’t care. I hope they continue to patch and tweak it, but as far as I’m concerned I have no wish to return the original PS1 version. To be able to start and just play this thing is all I ever wanted. Thanks GOG you’re the best.
Even if this version is inferior, i still prefer it on PC rather than console. Here i can back it up and in case my GOG account gets banned, i will still be able to play it.

This was mostly about the experience of play but yeah I know what you mean.
Also Ps1 graphics are way worse, on screenshots it looks ok but in motion the ps1 has this "wobble" that no amount of upscale can fix, unless you enable pgxp but this option introduces many issues.
sadly MGS 1 is completely destroyed but the Gamecube edition (I have a gamecube and the game...).
Worst : if you know emulation, someone upscaled the textures and frankly, it's really impressive.
I really hope that some can upscale the textures of MGS1 and MGS2, on PC.

But Konami has absolutely NO humor, when MGS is involved....
I think I'll get back to my Gamecube, sadly....

For me, the best choice is to own a PS3 with the bundle of metal gear solid : you can play all the MGS (even MGS 4) .

The PS3 Legacy Collection its cool because includes all the games (that matter), but for MGS1 only includes a digital code to download the PS1 version; that emulation is serviceable but barebones.
On the other hand, the Gamecube version has those Matrix-style cinematic sequences that don't fit MGS IMHO.

So, maybe its because of people's expectations, but the PC version of MGS is not even close to being "bad", at least compared to the alternatives.

Twin Snakes used an updated version of the MGS2 engine, which certainly looked nicer. However, Twin Snakes was also a terrible remake so "completely destroyed" isn't exactly accurate, to put it nicely. I'd rather keep the GOG version of MGS1, warts and all, if we had to choose between that and Twin Snakes on PC.
fair enough...

I certainly wouldn't mind if they ported Twin Snakes to PC as well - just to experience it without hunting down the game and a Gamecube (or Wii). Very happy to know MGS1 and MGS2 are there though - I can live without Twin Snakes if it never comes.

Twin Snakes has some wonky controls on GameCube, you can use the Dolphin Emulator on PC and rebind the controls to match the original game.

The thing is, GameCube controls work. If PC version of Twins Snakes would've been available, it'll probably had the same control setup as MGS2PC.
