Ever been stuck with Psycho Mantis or lost the case with Meryl's codec on it. Fear not, there are ways to get around this. This works on the original playstation version I there's no reason to think it wouldn't work here.

1. Meryl's codec frequency:
If you forget it and don't feel like looking it up just keep calling the colonel, after about 3 rings her number will appear in your codec.

2. Psycho Mantis:
Not everyone liked the idea of unplugging their controller while the console was running. Seems Kojima was thinking the same thing. Call the colonel, when he tells you to use port 2, DON'T. Instead let Mantis kill you. After restarting your fight with Mantis call the colonel again and he will tell you the alternative way of fighting Mantis.

Have fun guys.

I don't believe PC version has anything about switching ports

You can switch to the keyboard if you were using a controller.

You can see Meryl's codec frequency in one of the screenshots of the GOG store page of the game, kind of a roundabout way of the PS1 version's screenshots on the back of the case.

I know that, but there's a way to get it without doing that.

This trick still works regardless. Because who wants to play MGS with a keyboard.

I do. I finished a freeware version of MGS1 a few days ago using my keyboard. Oitside of gunplay it worked more than fine.
What about the reading your mind? I assume there's no way for it to search your PC for other Konami games, right?
Are these things just stripped out of the fight entirely?

Dude, do you really think i'm gonna waste time dying to psycho mantis then restarting the fight instead of switching ports which takes literally 5 seconds. Same thing for the google search, it takes also 5 seconds, it's not that it's not helpful, it's just way more time consuming than pulling out your phone/alt tabbing and making a quick google search. They just made that so you can keep progressing even if you had no clue what to do.

Looks like some people did find it helpful and I for one don't like stopping the flow of play nor do I like potentially damaging my console because I don't own a second controller. I found this to be very helpful.

He'll probably just talk about how you've been playing the game. This game was made to be played on an OG Playstation and there's not a lot that be can done to fix that unfortunately.

I beat Mantis last night by just using the Ctrl button on my keyboard to fire the gun whilst using the analog stick on my controller to move and aim, super easy and beat him first try.
At some point I decided to put my MGS and VR missions in the same case, with VR missions box art on the back.
When I played the game again later realizing I didn't have Meryl's frequency on the back, I ended up getting it from my Twin Snakes box! :D

Even though I knew the workarounds from playing (not well) from the original, the forum is for sharing information, and sometimes Google will end up giving you spoilers. Odd and sad to see people vilifying someone trying to help.

For some people, like myself, it's not a matter of "wanting", we just don't own controllers, so we stick to the default PC peripherals, which are the keyboard and the mouse.

For people (again, like myself) who don't own a controller, this "trick" is irrelevant. Is the fight more interesting when you use a controller? For sure. On keyboard alone all the game does is playing it like a regular section would. Everything just works. Knockout Meryl, fight Mantis, use first-person to know where he's attacking from, the standard stuff, except no need to change "ports" or use keyboard if you're playing with a controller.

Just leaving this here because the other dude who replied beat a "freeware" version of MGS1 (read: pirated, as there are no freeware versions of MGS1), whereas I beat the legally purchased version found here on GOG.

I do agree the Psycho Mantis fight is way inferior in the PC version, especially when compared to how clever it was on the original PSX hardware. Other than that, it's the same brilliant game we all know and love, and it does play great using just the keyboard.

As for the Meryl codec frequency tip, well... sorry, bud, in all honesty, I'd rather pick up my phone and google it (or just look at the screenshot on the GOG game's page) than going through all that hassle.
