As you can all tell there are some issues with Messiah. People are asking on this forum and other forums the solution to similar problems so I've taken a couple of solutions and compiled them here.

For the game readme it states update version 0.2, so it appears it installs with the patch. However I noticed that the 0.2 dx .exe in the 0.2 patch does not match the dx .exe file in the installation location and it is also missing the 3dfx .exe which may suggest the 0.2 patch is not sucessfully applied. Could this be looked into?

Interplay offer support for Messiah at this location: http://www.interplay.com/support/support.php?id=11

jordi pointed out in another post that this forum has some support:

The last post has this advice posted by anonymous at 2007-05-28 08:33:06:

Messiah V1.2 should run well on Windows XP with SP2 but only with the following steps:

1) Make a shortcut of the MessiahD3D.exe on the desktop.
2) Set the compatibility mode to Windows 98.
3) Alternatively add -i to the commandline to disable the annoying intros.
4) !Start the game without the CD2/AudioCD in the drive!
> The game asks for the CD2/AudioCD, simply click three times on ok and the game starts (with no crash).
5) After the game started up, you can put the CD2/AudioCD in the drive.
6) To prevent crashes disable "Pre-load cached files" as sad above.
7) For performance reasons don't use T&L in the graphic options.
8) Sometimes during play when you go into the menu and back into the game there is an error reading from the CD2/AudioCD. Simply go into the sound-menu and turn the CD-music off and on again.

If the 0.2 patch is sucessfully applied during install well thats great, but these issues should have been resolved, does anyone still have them?

This question / problem has been solved by FabManimage
I have found that I can launch MessiahD3D.exe directly with the -i +! options (so the shortcut points to ' D:GoGMessiahMessiahD3D.exe -i +!') and the game runs relatively smoothly. This also allows me to pick my monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050x32 -- launching Messiah with the normal GoG shortcut strangely does not.
To get around the crash after the Chot attacks, I must play with the -s option as well (to turn off all sound) until I get another loading screen.
This dates back to the original game, the level after the Chot attacks (the room with the Dominas) is bugged and crashes if sound is enabled :(
There is one area, an alley where the Chots and cops are fighting and you need to enter the cop area to disable a forcefield, where the game totally hangs on me whenever I open a certain door. If I start the game in safe mode, I can get past it, but if I reenable safe mode and load a save game from beyond the door, it hangs. (I'm on XP SP3.)
I'm assuming safe mode does the equivalent of the -s switch that jordi mentioned... but I played for about 20 minutes past that area, and I can't load any games from that part in non-safe mode.
I wonder if the patch addresses it... :(

As I recall, nope. You will have to play without sound from the Commander Console Room to past the gun turret level (where you shoot down ships to break platforms). When you enter the next area (you should get an F5 message about ' The Chots have captured the power generator') save and reload with sound, that should be the last of the crashes.
I was all set to buy this from GOG, even though I still own the original CD-Rom version, but it seems you still have to deal with exactly the same issues with the prepatched Download version, so there seems little point.
If you already have the original game, is there ANY advantages to getting the Download version on here?

Google Translator:

What is the error message: -1071242991: Unknown Error

I get this message when he tries to get to the desktop, but when I enter the game pressures 2 - 3 times the game goes further with the problem now so that's the error message every 3 seconden comes.

But when I press ALT + CTRL + ENF and click OK on the error message and go back in the game I speak, a black screen.

Does any one solution to this?
I have a strange issue with Messiah under Win7, but I seem to have had the same with Gorky17 and also Diablo.

I can't play any FMV, picture seems to stay still, and I the sound might hang up randomly.
However, if I press ESC it skips and the game plays fine.

Anybody encountered the same problem? Any idea how to fix this?

The patch IS NOT implemented in the GOG Version :-(
So sad....

I can´t install the patch because the installer can´t find the game.

After I replaced the messiahd3d.exe with the one in the installer the game runs fine in 1080p but without ingame speech or sound -(

Greets,

For me I got the 3dfx executable from the patch zip, put it in the messiah install directory and installed nGlide, it was fine then!
Other GOG games use nGlide - they should really look into it, the only issue so far is that CD audio is hit and miss, turning it off and on seems to help

Do you need to be in safe mode because I do and when you say turn on and off, as in the game settings or what? I tried all three different settings, nothing helped and after a while a text arrives saying "no cd audio available!!" or something similar.

No I'm running in normal mode using nGlide (Windows 7 32-bit, I beleive I only have 'run as admin' turned on)
I sometimes get a 'no CD Audio' message but then later Fear Factory will randomly kicks in, turning off CD audio in the options and back on sees to help but sound effects always work though... except when they don't - all sound does drop out completely occasionally but just opening the options menu and closing it again usually gets it back
Yesterday I stopped playing when the camera but stuck constantly revolving around my character!
I think its going to be playable with a bit of patience though...
Well, i get this error while i open up the game. i use Windows 8. and it saids can't read file: Messiah.cfg. what happened?
so disappointed.... I tried to play this game years ago when it first came out.. and it wouldn't work. I thought for sure I'd be able to get it working today.. well,,, sort of.

I'm using Crossover on a Mac. I'm finding all the same problems. It runs the intros, but the menu won't appear and the actual game won't appear. Although I can hear everything when i press random keys.

I downloaded the patch, installed that into my Crossover bottle, and it patched fine.
Does the same thing however.
Although when I run the D3D app instead it goes into safe mode and skips right to the menu. And from there I can actually play the game. But.... This time I can't HEAR anything..

It's either the video doesn't work, or the audio doesn't..

Pretty shitty deal either way.

I hope GoG release a decent working version. This was a really cool game that didn't get a lot of attention,, probably because of the bugs.

(and i don't think the GoG version actually has the patch, even though it says it does)
Messiah works fine with dgVoodoo. This software "translates" the old graphics API to Direct3D 11.

I bought the retail version of the game and had exactly the same problem as nyth1983 - crashing right before the menu or when starting the game in normal mode and no sound (only music) in safe mode. I have patch 0.2 installed.

My OS:
Windows 8.1 / 64 bit

Solution:
- Go to the following site and download the latest dgVoodoo version (I can't post the full link):
dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2
- Open the “MS” sub folder and copy all files to your games installation directory
- Copy the dgVoodooCpl.exe to your games installation folder too and run it from there
- Click the ".\" button next to the "Config folder" line to automatically select the Messiah directory and click "OK"
- Now follow the tip from erbkaiser (2nd post): Create a shortcut to the MessiahD3D.exe on your desktop and open Properties/Shortcut to add "-i +!" to the Target line
- Run the shortcut (retail owners should have the Audio CD in their CD/DVD drive)
- Open the graphics options and make sure to have "dgVoodoo DirectX Wrapper" selected as your driver
- If you don't hear the music in the main menu, open the sound options and activate "EAX / DS3D" or "DS Software 3D"
- Enjoy the game :)

PS: You can easily deactivate the watermark in the bottom right-hand corner. Just open dgVoodoo again, select the DirectX tab and disable the option "dgVoodoo Watermark".
