Stuff: I happened across this page and thought others might find it interesting. Tips for getting the game working for online play.

Our version has preconfigure network host - client
menu start -> GOG.com -> Master of orion 1 + 2 -> Master of Orion 2 -> Network
There one player choose Host and others choose client. Host needs to give others his IP and then he choose Multiplayer -> Network -> start new game
Clients input into console CONNECT host.ip.address
Then they also choose multiplayer - connect network and choose Muptiplayer -> Network -> join game
Have fun everyone! :)

When I try to start a new game (or hit "join game") under multiplayer I'm greeted by a message that says "Comm failure."
NM, was starting it from the wrong shortcut :-)

Then all we need to do is host a GOG.com tournament... maybe with prizes ;)
Hot damn that is awesome! Nice work GOG-team. Looking forward to some multiplayer with my brother when he gets around to buying it too ^^

It's exactly the little extra effort to include things like this that makes GOG attractive. I know that you're employing fixes that have already been figured out by other communities, but you make them very accessible to your customers. Way to go, guys!
I keep getting an "IPXNET Cannot connect to server..." error when trying to setup a game over the internet.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Ok, not seeing Network under Master of Orion 2. The contents I have go from NDATA.LBX to NEWGAME.LBX with nothing in between. :( Any idea what's up?

Ah-ha! Yes, there it is. Thank you.
Clearly, a little ignorance goes a long way in my case. ;p
