We both have ships on the same star but we can't bring up the screen to do trade, ally etc. We're playing right now so if someone could help quick that would be lovely thanks haha.

One of you would need to bring up the "Race" screen and ask for an audience.

The main problem you may have is that if either of you chose "Repulsive" you won't be able to trade tech or get treaties with each other.
