Good day everyone!

Do anyone have any suggestions for mods.

Maybe something to add more to the game (tech, research and so on).
Maybe larger maps with more star systems.

I had a look at the 1.4 patch and installed it. But it dont "work" i got it to patch and say complete but it refuse to run the game at version 1.4.

Any suggestions!

Thanks for any help!

The DOSbox version provided by GOG is already 1.4 (there is also a Win95 exe if I'm not mistaken, which is 1.3).

You might want to try the VDC mod available here: http://www.spheriumnorth.com/orion-forum/nfphpbb/viewtopic.php?t=613

Unlike the 1.4 patch (which was intended to fix leftover bugs), it changes the game balance noticeably.

Strange first time i ran the game it also said 1.3 so i tried to install 1.4 but 1.4 said that it was missing 1.3 so i downloaded 1.3 and put the files into the folder and then i could install 1.4 but it still run it as 1.3...

Hmm

Also going to try the mod :)

Well it's always said 1.4 for me when I launched from the GOG\Dosbox shortcut after installation. You sure you weren't launching the Windows executable instead?

Thank you for letting us know about this mod.

I am not sure I like most of the changes they made, most especially to the tech tree but it is sure interesting.

The main thing I LIKE is that you no longer have to skip Heavy Armor they removed it from the Autofactory lvl.

Sadly they moved Battle Pods WAAAYYY up to the 1500rp category along with Battlestation AND they lowered bonus space to only 25% from 50% it seems.

Soil Enrichment is now @900rp, Sub-Farms are where it used to be @400rp but give only 3food not 4.

Holo Simulator is now available at 150rp in the same category as Research Labs. Damn that's a tough choice.

They made Missiles even BETTER and Bombs as well. At the same time they kind of nerf'd Beams because Battle Scanners only give +25% now and were bumped up to 400rp and moved to computers category.

The tech tree has been a bit to much modified imho but could be fun. Take a look below at the PDF.

> In the ICEMOD, the base space you get for all ships except frigate, has been increased by 20% compared with the original game. A battleship has 300 space instead of 250. As 1.20 * 25% is 1.50, the total space is unchanged. And yeah, battle pods is quite late and a tougher choice with Battlestation & Recyclotron.

> Beams have not been nerfed, only the computers are different. The standard electronic computer gives +50 beam attack instead of default +25. So in fact, early beam ships and star bases can actually hit something :)
> Also, in the 9d version, the field with the battles scanner is 250RP, so a bit lower.

Rocco.40: > Also, in the 9d version, the field with the battles scanner is 250RP, so a bit lower.
Ah so they changed versions since I did that previous review because BScanners had been put upto 400rp.

Battle Scanners, in the original game, were already 250rp but in the Physics Field after Fusion Beam/Rifle. This was good because at this point your Lasers got Armor Piercing and Auto Fire. Now it's probably not worth putting them on your ship because of the more limited space.

The only thing they did was shift what category it was in. And since they also put Dauntless Guidance in the same field it is actually a bit of a tougher choice.

POWERED ARMOR, which gives +1 Hit and +10% Combat was at the 650rp previously with Robo-Miners and Battlestation but now is only 80rp and in same category as Reinforced Hull. This gives Ground Combat a WAAAAaaay to big of an early lead imho.

Originally the 80rp field is Reinforced Hull, Fighter Bays (moved to 400rp) and Anti-Missile Rockets (moved to 50rp Computers :headscratch:)
was wondering why you write 'they' but just realized I have never stated above that the mod is made by me :)
so having said that, thanks for your comments!

- Yes, agree that p.armor is to early and it is one thing that I want to address in the next iteration of this mod. maybe by switching with Batlleoids or something else, i don't know yet, as in fact I am reconsidering the whole construction branch.

- Anti-Missile Rockets are put in a pre-warp field so all a.i. players get them and can defend better against overwhelming human missile offenses. Would have pref. them to be in chemistry field but that is full (max 4 techs in a field)

have you played the mod yet?

Hey Roco.40, I'm definitely going to check out your mod, but I'm a bit busy atm. I read through your tech list and it looks pretty interesting.

I played the VDC mod for the first time a few weeks ago, and was actually wondering what they changed in the tech tree? It looked to me to be the same old tech tree as vanilla. Not "very difficult choices" at all. But the race picks were all different, and the Leaders were modified as well, so I know at least part of the mod was installed correctly.

But it got me thinking: since GOG sets up DOSBox, most people (me included) don't know the commands to tell DosBox to properly launch the mod rather than the original exe file. Are there instructions for how to install your mod on a Windows 7 system?

I have basic instructions included, although it assumes that you know how to access DOSBox settings .. will make an update for my next release with a bit more detail.

If you see an unchanged techtree than you are not running the vdc exe, which is called VDCREG.exe.

DOSBox has a file "DOSBox 0.74 Options.bat" that you can find in Program files (x86)\Dosbox
It opens a simple txt file at the bottom of which you should see the .exe (default is m2v140.exe or orion2.exe)
that should be changed to the new exe. You will notice that there is some text that is preceded by "#" which is a textline that dosbox will ignore- so you can make two lines:
# m2v140.exe
VDCREG.exe

hope this helps

EDIT- I just see now that there is already a thread for DOSBox on this forum, check that out...

I found a pretty good mod too: warmoo.com
The tech tree is completely rearranged with new technologies, the race picks are rebalanced, space on ships is increased, and you get certain technologies at the beginning for free including titan construction. It works well for multiplayer too, and the changes make the computers harder. There is a map generator included with additional command line switches.
ICEMOD v10 is out and things are clearly improved vs v9 and the stock AI races are much stronger in general.

I urge all to try it. .. neilkaz ..

Because CivFanatics has been down for a couple of days now and registration on Spherium is quite slow, I have created a blog where can post questions for ICE Mod. You can post here as well offcourse, but I am not checking very regularly.
Have a good weekend all!
