Hello everyone,

I plan to buy MOO 1and 2 from GOG, but I will play it on a notebook without numeric keypad.
I played MOO1 back in the days when it was a new game, and I think the numeric keypad was needed for tactical combat.

Does anyone managed to play on a computer withou num pad ?

Thank you,

Well I've played MoO2 all the way through (a few times) and I don't have a numeric keypad. So it's definitely possible to play without one. :)

I've played MoO1 a bit and I don't think it requires a numeric keypad either. Maybe the numeric keypads were used as shortcuts? However, all the tactical commands are available to click on in the screen and the game is turn-based, so even if it were the case that the numkey was used as a shortcut, the numkey pad wouldn't be necessary.

EDIT: I've checked the manual for MoO1... The numeric keypad doesn't seem to be used for anything. You should be fine. And are definitely fine for Mo02 ... enjoy!

Thank you crazy_dave.

I'm going to get the MOO1 and 2 pack :)
The numeric keypad is used for diagonal movements in tactical combat

In MoO1? Because I've definitely moved diagonally in MoO2 and didn't require a numeric keypad ...

EDIT: is it a shortcut? because you can use the screen to move in any direction ... the manual doesn't say anything about using the keyboard (not that I disagree that you can)

Sorry, my mistake, I must have been thinking of another game for moving the ships.. Keypad has nothing to do with either game.

No problem, but I wonder of what game you and vinz were thinking? There once were a lot of (well maybe not a lot, but certainly more than today) space 4X games. Since you both had the same recollection, it wouldn't surprise me that one had a numkey interface for tactical combat.

When I realized my mistake, started thinking. Almost every Sid Meier game I have played (Civilization, Alpha Centauri, Pirates) and two other games: Machiavelli: the Prince and Emperor of the Fading Suns all use the NumPad to move units.
