Master of Orion 3 was very poorly received upon it's initial release. Quicksilver issued a few patches, things got better.
Fans got together and made mods for the game that fixed many of the glaring issues and bugs, and added some things that should have been there in the first place. The Tropical mod is the most current and well developed mod that I know of.
I will be hosting this mod file for the foreseeable future. I have removed the trojan that I found in one of the zip archives. I have thoroughly virus scanned this archive, using MSSE and Jotti's Virus Scan.
This is confirmed to work. I have played numerous games to completion with this mod installed and enabled.
1. Install Master of Orion 3
2. Download the mod (25Mb)
3. Make a backup of your Moo3.exe file. Copying it into the same directory with a different name is fine. (default location is "C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Master of Orion 3\Moo3.exe")
4. Extract the contents into your Master of Orion 3 directory. (default location is "C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Master of Orion 3\"). Confirm any file overwrites that might take place.
5. Run the "Moo3Patcher.exe" program.
The mod is now installed. You may enable and disable modifications and fixes at your leisure.
Have fun. This really does make the game much, much better.

Well, that seems painless enough. How did you manage to get the disc prompt in the first place?
Anyway, thanks for verifying, I'll be buying the game tonight. Really curious if even after patching it lives up to its two star status :D
There are multiple versions of the mod. evmiller pointed me to the newest one in the general mod discussion thread.
Really, all the work was his for finding the newest version, I just wrote a guide.

Cheers for the guide and mod link.
I can't run the patcher, missing MSVCR71.dll

LordCinnamon: I can't run the patcher, missing MSVCR71.dll

The amount of DLLs this patcher requires to run is insane.
here
Drop that into the Moo3 folder along with all of the other things the patcher put in.
That should get you going. I have added that one to the full mod zip file as well.

yup, that worked. Thanks! Game starts and I can start a new game. I'll try to play (though apparently not everyone agrees that this game is something you can actually play, or indeed, that it even is a game :p ) later today. If anything comes up , I'll let you know.
Spreadsheet-y fun(?), here I come!
I seem to be missing the .dll that lets me play the game in a window. Do you know which one that might be?
Edit: Nevermind, to get it working I have to run the desktop in 16-bit.

Hmm, am I supposed to not get any ships at the beginning? I got the impression I was supposed to start with 2 scouts and a colony ship.
Also, the military and demographic info tabs glitch when I use them. A large blue rectangle remains after I close them and the rest of the UI save the upper bar becomes unresponsive. Anyone else with the same problem?

As far as I know you don't start with any ships. This may be the Tropical mod, or the game itself, but I'm not sure.
There are definitely still some bugs, even with all the fixes included. You can click around and open other windows, or press escape to get the windows to recede.
Why my OO3 is now said 1024x768, as my screen is 1280x1024??
(I run the patcher but closed its window without touching anything)

Hmm, actually, I tried the tropical 1.21 mod, replaced the .exe with the gog .exe and reinstalled the patcher .dll and the patches I wanted, and I prefer it to the newer version. No glitchy UI, I get my starting ships and the starting screen isn't so terribly ugly/"funny".

If your having the problem I think your having. Go into the game options and turn the "UI animations settings" to OFF. I think this glitch crept into the game when the modders changed the UI from the fixed 800x600 to1024x768. Don't remember it being an issue in the original game. Easy fix though.

The original game's UI was a fixed 800x600 resolution. Low for even 2003 standards, and was a major complaint from fans as the game was being developed. The modders were able to increase the UI to 1024 x 768 by re-arranging things a bit such as was done in Tropical. Not possible to get a higher res at the moment.
