Does this game have a single player campaign (like Heroes of Might and Magic, Lords of the Realm) or just random maps (like Civilization, Master of Magic)?

Just random maps. The Galaxy is generated from a seed so it is possible to play a map that someone else has played or replay a map if you want to try something different in that game.
