jsvarner: I'm shocked that we still don't have the OSX support back on this title. It's also hard to believe I can get Master of Orion 1 & 2 to run but Master of Magic is somehow an issue? If there is a technical or licensing reason for the OSX support removed, is it too much to ask that we get an answer as to why? I've been checking this thread on and off for months with no response.

I've never wanted to hand my money over anymore than for this game- but not if I can't actually play it.
GOG does not always reply to individual threads, and they might not even be aware of this thread's existence. Try contacting support directly if you want to inquire about an OSX version.
Hey folks,

Best solution I could come up with is:

1) Download the MOM windows installer from GOG
2) Download and install Porting Kit (you could also just get wineskin but Porting Kit makes it easier and it's also free)
3) Download and install DOSBox
4) Open Porting Kit and select File -> New Custom Port...
5) Cancel the 2 prompts to install Mono and Gecko
6) Select the MOM windows installer executable and run the installation. It will finish with errors but they are safe to ignore.
7) After the installation, right click on the Wrapper and select "Open C: drive"
8) Open the GOG Games folder and you'll see the Master of Magic folder
9) Right click the Master of Magic folder and select "Copy Master of Magic"
10) Go to wherever you want this to live, i.e. Downloads, right click in the folder and select "Paste Item"
11) I rename the folder to MOM, as it's easier without spaces

Now you can run the game using DOSBox from the Terminal app:
> open -a DOSBox --args -conf ~/Downloads/MOM/dosboxMOM.conf (change this path to where you put MOM)

That will start DOSBox with the settings that GOG intended then you just run 3 commands in DOSBox:
> mount c ~/Downloads/MOM
> c:
> magic

Not too bad once the install is finished, but let me know if you find an easier way :)

I saw the instructions (thanks liquidki) but like the other poster I like convenience a lot. Did anyone so far con tact GOG Support about the missing OSX installer? If so, what did they say?
Indeed, not seeing MOM available on OS-X is a huge disappointment.

As stated before, there is no reason this title would not work the same way countless other DOS titles already work, using DOS emulation.

I suspect there is no technical issue here.

I got an answer from GOG support on this topic :

"We only offer a Windows version of Master of Magic because we do not have rights to distribute other versions."

So that explains it.
The answer is clear, and btw, support is nice, it also includes external links explaining how to make it work manually (i.e. without Gog Galaxy).

But it's also a bit worrying, for the GOG business as a whole, and is shaking up my trust in the whole system.

As you know, there is no Windows nor Mac version of MoM.
There's only one DOS version, which must be played on modern platforms through emulators.

So now, the right holders don't just authorise distribution of the DOS binary, they also give themselves the right to authorise _running the binary_ on a limited set of platforms, including a limited set of emulators.

I'm not sure if they really have this right, but as usual, the right holder nonetheless takes it first, and now, if it's confirmed either by the market or by jurists, it's a pretty bad precedent, for _any_ old game.

The whole promise of GOG is that you buy a license for an old game that used to run on old platforms that do no longer exist, and then run it on whichever modern platform you have, modulo technical limitations. But now, you don't buy a right to play MoM, you only get a right to "run MoM on a limited set of modern platforms that's controlled by the right holder". The expectation here is that right holders will use this power to require more money for additional platforms.

Besides, in the case of MoM, this list of platforms is restricted after being bought !
As you know, a Mac installer was available when we bought our MoM license.
Which means, the right to play MoM on Mac has been _removed after it was bought_.
So now, what's next ? Which other game are we no longer going to be able to play on Mac, or on Linux, because the license is suddenly restricted after being bought ? That sounds nasty.

As I said, this is shaking my trust in the whole edifice.

Sure, I know it's possible to download the Windows version, extract the original DOS package, install an emulator ourselves, and do the whole complex setup thing by ourselves. But that's not the point. I could already do it before (I already have a physical copy of MoM), and the only reason to buy it on Gog is to get Cloud and Installation convenience.

That is, if we can play the game at all...
I don't have a Mac, but I whole-heartedly agree. Whoever decided to make it illegal to package the very same DOS game in a Mac installer, has likely made a mistake. This makes no sense, and is especially sketchy for people that purchased the game on GOG when the OSX installer was available. I love GOG and realize that not everything is legally under their control, but this is incredibly odd and not in line with how things are typically done here. :(
