I doubt 2K gives a fugg; all they want is for people to buy the game. It's music studios we need to worry about.

joppo: OP is a bit confusing, but mostly right. From what I understand you must execute steps 1 to 3 on the retail version, not on GOG's.

GOG's version doesn't have that file anymore, instead it loads the music from the SOUNDS folder.

marcinshaq: First part is a bit confusing, I'll make the necessary changes.

Thanks! :)

EDIT: Done. Should be more clear now.
Cool, thank you for this thread and for providing the files we need.

So should my sounds folder have a MUSIC subfolder in it? Or should I copy the files in the MUSIC folder into the sounds folder with all the other sound files?
Isnt this the same as downloading the game from torrent ?

Couldn't you say that about any games though?
Great solution! Thank you!

Not exactly. I own the CD version of the game, which comes with the right to use it's content (not sell, but use). So using the GOG file to make the game run on modern system and using the music from the CD are both perfectly legal.

2k might not care now, but they will start to care if & when the RIAA and/or other miscellaneous copyright trolls start barking up their tree. If & when that happens, the game will be patched to make these mods unusable with the patched versions. That would screw over most Galaxy users who have game updates enabled by default (IIRC).

No, torrents are better because they don't require mods to be installed in order to play a non-bastardized version of the game. Hopefully that will always be so because if humanity is lucky, then no one ever will ever upload this butchered GOG re-release as a torrent.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: ...
I'll be more diplomatic than my previous posts: I do not enjoy hearing you complain about this release, but it is your right to. GOG is not going to remove the game from their store no matter how much you may want them to. It is up to 2K to re-negotiate the music rights, and obviously they don't want to for reasons between them and music companies. I do not think the hosted music will be affected nor will any anti-music patches happen.

I'd argue it's also up to 2k and GOG not to take unethical actions, which releasing a butchered version of the Mafia game is, because it's committing desecration against the art.
