I'm very early in the game and I hit this stumbling block. I need to get past a gun turret and it just destroys all of my units almost instantly.

Use Missile Lauchers.

Use anything that has a greater range than the gun turret - missile launcher, rocket launcher, assault gun. To see the potential range of any weapon (friend or foe), click on the range button on the left-hand menu screen.
