Normally I'm more of an rts player (think the dune games, supcom and total annihilation), but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the occasional turn based game. When I picked up max, mainly out of sheer interest, I thought it was quite superb, my only experience with tbs so far being limited to age of wonders and civilization and the likes of those.

What I'd like to ask is wether there are any newer, more modern (modern in my book being anything made after 2000) games that play like max? On GOG I've found battle isle (a bit antiquated though, especially as I'm looking for something newer) and battle worlds: kronos (which is newer, but I'm not sure about buying it...yet- anyone care to enlighten me about that game?).

Basicly, I'm looking for a newer MAXesque game, which has most if not all of its elements, and perhaps adds something new?

I come humbly to this forum, to ask the oldschool TBS savants wether they can help a late newcomer with his ignorant questions ;)

kind regards and thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions/advice!

ps: I'd play max2 and be done with it for the moment but from what I've gathered that's quite an atrocious game the world would've been better of with if it hadn't been made in the first place.

If you're looking for a turn-based strategy game with a similar sci-fi theme to the original M.A.X., try Moonbase Commander... or if you like a turn-based strategy game with a medieval like theme, try the Heroes of Might & Magic series. When in doubt, peruse the GOG site in the Strategy Games section where you can get an idea of the game that interests you based on the screenshots and commentary from the fans who enjoy them.

About M.A.X.2:
To appreciate M.A.X. 2 demands an acquired taste. I personally believe the game should have been made because of the number of new features it contains compared to the original game. I also found M.A.X.2 very easy to install on any modern Windows PC.
The original M.A.X. was (still is!) a brilliant strategy game that I play today, however, the game is too difficult to install on a PC that doesn't have Windows 95 or access to DOS so I have to use DOSBOX... an additional application just to play the game..

Moonbase Commander looks intersting, I'll keep an eye on that one.

Battle worlds kronos seems like a nice game, and has hotseat (which is a must for me-I play these games with my younger nephews ;) ). With the current gog sales it should get a cut in its price in a tick as well.

Heroes of might and magic doesn't really look like what I was searching for actually; I'm sure it's a nice game, but I'm currently looking for something a bit more futuristicly themed.

What I'm basicly looking for is a turn-based game, on about the same level as max where the amount of units and the size of the maps is concerned (although I wouldn't mind if they were bigger), with basebuilding, managing an economy and, not the top of the list of priorities, but it would be welcome, a supreme commander like intel-counter intel system (radars and jamming etc) and a good variety of units for each faction.

That's quite a load of demands though, and any games you could think of that fit a few of them would be welcome as suggestions.

on a last note, I'm the gamemaster of an avid band of Fading suns players, and I saw they once made a game about it too. I looked up a few vids and stuff, but can anyone tell me what it was like?

edit: about max2, I have it on GOG along with max 1, do you think I could give it a try, having not much experience with these kinds of games? What I meant by "from what I've gathered" is that I've heard hearsay but have no firsthand experience (unfortunately in dutch we have a few similar expressions to it that have a slightly different meaning, apologies for causing miscommunication).

Try to keep in mind when launching M.A.X. 2 that you may or (may not) encounter technical problems. If you can accept that and look past those issues, you can see that there really is a fantastic strategy game underneath the grime.

Try to save often, I'd recommend.
The Galactic Civilization games are great turn-based games. Lots of depth.

I have MAX2 installed on my Win 10 system and it works fine. Out of about 100 times I've played it, it's crashed about 10 times. So that's pretty good. Mind you I play real time and not turn based.
