i just downloaded Lords of Realm: SE yesterday and the same thing is happening to me. It goes black like the program is about to start, but then it just goes back to desktop again :(

two words, man: gog support. they're amazing..!
Are you using the GOG Galaxy installer? If so, don't. Download the external installer and install the game manually. If you're going to use the GOG Galaxy installer, make sure you set the "Game installation folder" to "C:\GOG Games". By default GOG Galaxy sets that folder under a subfolder of Programs Files (x86) which is likely to break some older Win9x games.

Here is another solution:
try to download a ddraw.dll file and add it to the game directory.
It has worked for me...
