I was fishing around about this issue and came across this post here:

Apparently, the problem with missing audio is due to the special.mpq file in the directory. As per the post, I moved this special.mpq file out of the main Lords of Magic directory, started the game, and am now getting more than one voiceover response from the units. Groovy.

Note I had installed that unofficial 3.02 patch. The post mentioned the special.mpq file is just audio, so hopefully it won't affect anything else in the game. Hope this helps.

Seems to work for me as well. Pity GOG has not taken it upon themselves to make the game work as intended out of the box.
