Is it safe to leave items on the ground in Lands of Lore I? Or will stuff disappears after a while for one reason or another (either the game being unable to store in the savegame files the location of every items you drop, or due to some random game mechanics?)

I've just reached Opinwood and I'm trying to min-max my cash, between selling stuff in Yvel, the swamp (both before and after you retrieve the mask for the chief, which affect the price of stuff you buy and sell) and feeding items to the stone faces for extra money. Unfortunately, Yvel won't be accessible for a very long time and in the meantime I thought I could just drop things on the ground in a specific location, like spread across a bunch of tiles at the entrance of the swamp, but the idea my loot might despawn for one reason of another has got me super worried now.

So, any of you old Lands of Lore pros can light my lantern here? I'd really appreciate it.

Loot on the ground doesn't despawn. Though you can make items permanently inaccessible or disappear in a few different ways:
1. Throwing an item into the swamp water
2. Selling them
3. Giving it to the stone heads in the swamp, in exchange for healing or money

From memory the game prevents you doing some of these things with quest items but I think it may be possible to drop an important item in the swamp and make your game unwinnable.

It won't randomly despawn though.

Nice, thanks for the answer, rmeakins, you're the best!

It's quite possible to get into unwinnable state by wasting one or more Vaelean's Cube ... so I wouldn't trust the quest items protection ;)

Really? How's that? The cubes disappear only when you use them where you're supposed to. Anywhere else, you have unlimited uses. Unles by "unwinnable state" you mean "an extremely hairy situation". ;)

... yes, definitely "extremely hairy" is the correct wording :D

[with the unpatched one you could also lose the item on the cursor by an accidental activation of the cube in a weapon slot, iirc, but that should not happen with the gog version]
