thelovebat: How do you find the scaling option in your graphics card/display setup? I'm not finding anything for that in all the menus I can find. And I'm using windows 7.
What kind of card do you have? For an Nvidia card, you need to go to the Nvidia Control Panel (you can get to that by right-clicking your desktop and then selecting it from the menu). Once there, make sure you are looking at "advanced settings". Then, on the menu on the left, under "display" you will see "change flat panel scaling". I recommend selecting "Use NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio".

For an ATI card, it's a little harder to find... you have to open the Catalyst Control Center (again, you get there by right-clicking your desktop) and then select your display, and go to "attributes". Annoyingly, there's a weird bug where you can't actually set the scaling option until you LOWER your resolution to something less than your native resolution. Then you can set it, and then set your resolution back to normal and it will work. Very strange. Anyway, here's a picture of where it is for ATI cards:

my videos show a black screen. Sound is ok.
W 7 64 bit ATI 5850 HD latest drivers updated on 4/29/2012
I do have DIVX player installed ...could this be a problem with a codec?
Videos play fine from outside the game when running them from their folder.
I uninstalled Google Chrome
Thanks for any help!
My game on Win7 Pro *acts* like it isn't going to run, but if I wait a good ten minutes (I'm not kidding or exaggerating, I start the game and just browse the web until it decides to start up), it will eventually start. The only clue I have is the following entries in the log:

CAudioMixer: Error return <-2> from CAudioMixer::Add( CAudioInst *pCAudioInst... )
CAudioMixer::_Load: Can't create a True3D sound definition.... exiting...

That's repeated over and over in my log, so I have to assume it's trying to load some setting the sound driver doesn't support. Yet, once the game is running, everything works fine, including all the sound and voiceovers.

Could you send that along to our Support department? Maybe this is something we might be able to fix. Thanks :D
This is how I got Return to Krondor running. Win 7 64bit (may work for others)

-Open Control Panel ->System -> Advanced System Settings

-On the Advanced tab click Performance Settings...

-Data Execution Prevention tab

-Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those i select (you want this selected)

-ADD RtK.exe which should come up as Game Engine for Return to Krondor (tm)

-Apply

May request you to Reboot, Now give it a shot

If this works for you, let us know.
Tried pretty much everything on this page, I am getting the following in the RtK.log file

Game Engine for Return to Krondor (tm) v1.00.6

Following the support page fixed it for me

i'm having the same issue.

launch game, but it wont start. a processes is running int he background for the game, and in the task bar on the bottom right there is a launcher icon for it

log file shows nothing other than i attempted to start it

i emailed support, here is the dxdiag http://pastebin.com/b3fwZAzf

i just want to play my game man

update: it works! i don't even know what really fixed it. the best i can do is tell you what i remember doing that may have had a difference so here it goes...

frusterated that it wouldn't work and depressed i decided to do a completely fresh reinstall of windows 10 64 bit, after i did that it didn't help the game run. just the same thing kept happening

then i decided to scour my motherboards manufacturer for all updates, softwares, and so on. i do believe i tried to run the game after all this and it didn't work

getting backt o depressed i noticed my fonts were jagged and it drove me up the wall, in my search to solve this dilemma i suddenly remembered windows has updates so i ran them all over and over until nothing was left to update. fonts were still jagged, so i went into System, advanced system, and performance and ticked "best appearnce" jaggies were gone (thank you whew)

it was at that point i decided to try running the game again agenst all hope, and it immediatly works!

so i'll point out this is a fresh install of RtK and i did absolutely nothing to it. i didn't change any compatibility settings, didn't touch the .ini's and so on.

so just now i ticked "best performance" on the perfermoance settings and the game still works. the windows updates i installed between now and then...

bunch of security updates for flash player, asp.net mvc 4.0, C++ 2010

before that (and saddly not listed by windows in the update history) was some kind of major update that was labled a home edition upgrade so big that when i restarted the computer they threw the "hi, this will only take a moment. everything is where you left it" screen

some other things worth mentioning is that i installed Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Crypt of the Necro Dancer, Thief Gold, and Banished. who knows, if it wasn't the windows update maybe one of these games gave me what i needed to get the game to work

think ill post a new dxdiag http://pastebin.com/GvbjijDj

read above post for *possible* solution
it stopped working again, i'm not sure why but i'm going through the paces trying to get it started again. if i have to ill delte the entire operating system again and do everything verbatum until i get it working again

the fact that i got it working once means there is a key to all this, and now that i know that key exist i ain't stopping9

update:

i got it working again but inconsistently and with no explanation that makes sense to me. so i'm not really any closer to solving the mystery for other people but i can leave what i did and tried here and maybe someone else can make more of it

when i discovered the game wasn't working again i thought to myself that alot has happened since i last played the game and that maybe one of the other games i recently played changed a file like a .dll or something the Rtk needed to work. so i deleted and reinstalled all 4 games mentioned in the previous post starting with the GoG games. which did nothing

Blood dragon however did get the game running again after running the 1.01 patch and exiting the game and then attempting to start Rtk. this worked, however it made no sense that this would work so i restarted the computer and tried to get Rtk running before i did anything else. Rtk didn't work

i ran farcray 3 blood dragon again, patched to 1.02 and exited the game when i got to the main menu. tried Rtk again, and it works. just to be sure i'm not loosing my mind i try this same process again with attempting to run Rtk before and after blood dragon and i got the same results

still confused i decided to restart, try rtk, and this time try running a different game like Splinter Cell (the original) on steam. rtk works after i do this

but this still makes no sense so i restart again and run the game before i do anything else and it works, with a slight delay of like 4 seconds

conclusion: so i'm no closer to figuring out what got this game working, and my only wild guess is that maybe blood dragon or splintercell installed or repaired some kind of file that Rtk needed but couldn't do itself. but that could be way off base and have nothing to do with it and it could revolve around something much more random and i just happen to be lucky enough to get my game working...but i'm sticking with that hunch seeing that i have nothing else to go on

i think i may have stumbled on something here:

so my game wasn't working again, and after trying my previous tricks to get it working again it just wouldn't. i remembered somethign i changed very recently and disabled Nvidia Share (only availible in beta, but is otherwise a renamed Shadow play)

then i restarted my computer, ran blood dragon, and tried Rtk. it worked

so then i turned nvidia's share back on, restarted the computer, ran Rtk and it didn't work. i went into the nvidia settings and completely disabled nvidia's share and Rtk instantly went fullscreen the instant i disabled it because i didn't end Rtk's task.

so in my opinion this makes all overlays like Nvidia's share, and maybe even windows 10 new game console overlay a suspect. if your having problems, turn off any such overlays like nvidias, windows new one in 10 (who knows maybe even areo in 7 and vista) and if AMD has one turn that off too just turn it all off and let me know.

I had a very similar issue, and have made two reliable observations: 1) the game will only work if I have internet, and 2) performing "free experimentation" alchemy with the same ingredients as any recipe that is already in the recipe book will crash the game. These are both very repeatable errors. I have a Windows 7, 64x system.

Had no problem playing the GOG version with no internet.

I don't recall many crashes during alchemy, but perhaps I simply didn't do this?

You are my Savior! I didn't do all of the other stuff, just changed to best performance and it immediately worked. I had been trying different ideas for months and this was the trick.

Thank you, Layarion!

Just wanted to say that chirker's solution (from the end of page 1) worked for me, thanks!
But the weird thing is, it works only immediately after a restart, then stops working if you start it again.
After a new restart, it works once again.
