While playing through knights and merchants, I really like this style of game...

I am not even certain what genre you would call this. City Building?

Anyway, looking for something similar since I am almost finished with this.
Actually there are not many games like Knights & Merchants out there. Maybe The Settlers comes close to it (there exists a pretty good remake, if you are not interested in the original version), but even this one has not the option to control your army like in KaM.

But if you like 'city building' with a little fighting part: Did you ever try Anno 1404 (or an older release of this series)?

Actually, I tried settlers 2 here and I was turned off by it even though it was close...

BUT!!!

Someone told me about Settlers 6 and so far I am loving it!

Anno 1404? No, I haven't ever heard of it. You say there is an entire series? Tell me more!

Haha, I actually had to goole the game, because they sell the international version under a different name. Look for Dawn of Discovery.

Edit: More information on the series:
- 1602 A.D. (1998)
- 1503 A.D. (2002)
- 1701 A.D. (2006)

Wow, never heard of that either but it looks interesting! Even the Anno 1503 game looks like something I could get into. Even found it on sale for 6.99

Thanks much for showing me these.

No problem. I've added you some more information on the series (look at my last post), so you can choose which part you may prefere.

Dawn of Discovery is by far the best part of the series, because it combines all the good stuff from the earlier releases (and leaves out the crap). If you don't wanna buy a full price game, check out 1701 A.D., which is the second best one. 1503 A.D. is not that good, because the developers messed up with some good ideas they had in the first part (1602 A.D.). But that of course is my personal experience. :)

Ah thats too bad, since it seems like an interesting time to play in.. Like Sid Mierers Colonization. Anyway, 1701 you say? I will most definitely give it a look see since I really enjoy this genre of game.. but Its hard to find in the states. Most strat games these days are Total War or Warcraft clones :\

1503 A.D. is not 'bad', but it feels like it is 'not so good', at least if you know the other parts of the series. :)

1701 A.D. (and 1404 A.D. of course) are not that old, so you should find a demo version of these. I recommend you to give both of them a try and then just decide by yourself. 1404 A.D. is undoubtable the best one, but 1701 A.D. comes very close to it.

1404 A.D. (and its very good addon 'Venice') you can also buy via steam, if that is an option for you.

Odd, I looked it up on Steam and I get this message:

Notice: The game is currently not available for purchase.

Wonder why?

I just checked it and you are right: Not for sale at the moment. Maybe they ran out of keys. Good that I got my copy some months ago... :)

I am waiting GOG to get the Anon series too....already vote it in the wish list. That is exactly the series that I would like to try out too though The latest require too high spec hardware....

What other combat strategy game can you actually execute a "starving" strategy? A very realistic approach but only KaM has implement it.

If not counting the combat, focusing on city building, I would definitely recommend Zeus (another one waiting GOG to get it for me re-own it)

Just find that steam is having 1701 on sales for 7.49 only, sounds a very good price and good start of Anno series for me. Thanks Rhineland.
Dawn of Discovery is really a beauty but video card requirement is too high for me.

I hope GOG re-releases the first part (Anno 1602). It is a beautiful masterpiece that has its totally own flair, and you see how this (at least in Germany) very popular series started.

And yes, Anno 1404 requires quite a good machine, if you want to run it at full details. But check out the demo version and you will see, that you can lower the settings a lot. Then the game gets a little uglier of course, but it is still very beautiful to look at.

I definetly recommend you to buy Anno 1701 via steam, if it has that low price! Not only that it is a very good part of the series: They also included the addon, which adds more missions and fixes some comfort issues. For about 7 $ it is a must-buy!

I just purchased the game. It does look pretty good. It even includes the expansion Sunken Dragon. The soundtrack is really good, I hope Steam have options like GOG to download the soundtrack. (Actually the first thing that attract me about the Anno series is the marvelous soundtrack)

Just played the first tutorial, and I have to admit I quite enjoy the system there. Thanks, Rhineland for introducing the game. Hopefully Axiom can catch this game in time during the sales. It is a great deal.

Thanks to you both!

I recently got Settlers 6 and I am loving it as much as Knights and merchants. I didnt see Anno 1701 so I thought it wasn't on steam, but seeing you got it on steam I was like... Hmmm, let me look again.

1701 A.D. gold is what I was looking for. And yuppers I got 1701 A.D. for $7 *arm pump*
Soon as settlers 6 is done it is next on my 'must play' list.

Again, thanks to both of yo for your helpful advice.

EDIT: Yeah I would love to see Zeus, Pharaoh and Emperor the Rise of the Middle Kingdom all on GOG *hint hint if any higher up gogers are listening*
