When I played this game as a kid there were no voices, just boxes of text. these new voices are hideous and I can barely even play the game much less enjoy it. How do I turn on subtitles? There doesn't seem to be an option.

floppy version has no voices, this is the cd talkie version there is no way to get text without that version.

I felt the same way, but muddled through to the end. As soon as I heard Cedric's voice I tried to turn the speech off, but couldn't! Childhood memories shattered! lol

How about playing WITHOUT your computer's volume on? Most of the sound in the game is voices anyway, so just MUTE IT!

He can hate the voices because Roberta Williams even hated the voices. ;) But I do agree, they are pretty funny!

I love the voices. It's what I thought made the game(s) unique in it's time.

As someone says, she voiced a few of the voices herself... The Rat comes to mind, and one of the Harpies!

As I understand it Roberta actually did the voice casting in KQ5 CD version! It wasn't done by any third party groups... So she ultimately chose who did the voices!

She's never stated that she hated the voices, but wa dissapointed that they couldn't get paid voice actors. With the low budget, they got employees to do the voices who weren't trained in voice acting. In later games (GK1 being one of the best known), they were able to hire professional actors to do the voices. So, Roberta was not happy with the quality of the voice acting in KQ5 and was happy that they were able to eventually get professionals to do them

KQ6 was the first king's quest to get many professional actors... It was a major advertising point...

Gods, Josh Mandel was practically what MADE KQ5 so fun for me. I thought he did a great King Graham, and the rest of the voice acting was just fine. I actually quite liked Cedric's voice.

I just understand why some people get so upset when voice acting is put into a game. Then again, I typically have both subtitles AND voice acting on, when possible in games, so that I can always spot a line I didn't understand due to accents or just volume issues.

I can't wait to play KQ5 again, I just kinda hate having to muddy through the first four cause, while they weren't bad, KQ5 was the first one that I felt was truly great. Voices, included.
