When I start the game, it directly quits to the desktop with a "send error to Microsoft" message. I'm running the game on XP SP3, GeForce 7900 GS, : Intel Core2 6400, 2GB RAM

I encountered this too, and I found the solution. Fortunately I have an old copy myself (it runs on XP but not Windows 7 which is why I got this from GOG). It seems they left out one of the files - starttxt.txt. Without this file, the game will crash in Windows XP, and display garbage text on the main menu in Windows 7.
Just create a file called "starttxt.txt" and paste these lines into it. It should work fine after that - it does for me.

You must be running in 256 color mode or higher.
You can change the color depth from the control panel display icon.
This solved it for me. Thank you very much!
Hi tried this solution and it did not work for me. I am creating the 'starttxt.txt' file in the main KQ8 directory (i.e. C:\Program Files\GOG.com\KQ78\KQ8 for my computer) is that right? Also the type of file I am creating is a Notepad text file is it or am I getting this wrong? Also do I directly copy all of this into the notepad:

I am in the US and tried copying and pasting the text above into a starttxt.txt file and it still crashes
here another one, i also tried the starttxt file but kq8 still crashes.

Is it possible that all of you have Windows set to hide extensions? If this is the case, then your text file that seems to be called "starttxt.txt" is actually called "starttxt.txt.txt."
Try renaming it to just "starttxt" and see if it stays a notepad document?
If this isn't it, then I don't know what's wrong. All I know is this fixed it for me and it fixed it for Mokus.

It still isn't working for me I tried starttxt.txt and starttxt.txt.txt still doesn't load the game. It said something about mask/system 32 missing??
I tried this solution, did not work for me, nor did it vary the results whatsoever. I would not say this problem is solved.
I also had the same problem and the solution worked just fine :)
Thanks!
