I've been unable to continue playing because when I try to enter the bandit's camp in the desert, I get the following error message:

You did something that we weren't expecting.
Whatever it was, you don't need to do it to finish the game.
Try taking a different approach to the situation.
Error 5. SCI Version x.yyy.zzz

No matter what I do, I get the message if I enter the bandit's camp. I even followed a walkthrough in case I was missing something or was doing something I shouldn't but I still get the error.

I've searched the web but I've been unable to find anything regarding it.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the error. If any of you guys have any ideas of what's going on, please let me know.

What I've tried, so far:
- Reinstalled the game.
- Started again, same problem.
- Tried to reach the camp before saving the ants or bees.
- Tried to reach the camp before and after getting into the dark forest.
- Installed SCUMMVM and the game goes to debug mode when trying to enter the bandit's camp.

The "oops" errors, as I recall, are speed related. One thing you can try is set the speed to max and detail to minimum, then try to enter the screen with the bandit camp. If not, try the minimum speed.

Just wondering, were you using DOSBox prior to trying ScummVM? I thought the GOG version came pre-packaged with DOSBox, and DOSBox usually corrects these issues.

It actually isn't possible to go more than one screen into the dark forest and make it out alive without visiting the bandit camp first. You could revisit the camp later, but there wouldn't be any reason to do so :)

Yes, I used the DOSBox that came pre-packed with the game.

That didn't work.

Tried all combinations:
- Max speed and min detail.
- Min speed and min detail.
- Max speed and max detail.
- Min speed and max detail.

Strange. You might want to try running the game through ScummVM. That should prevent the error

The OP stated this was tried, and triggered a debug mode.

Can you please post what the error message is?
In case it's a signature error, please also paste the message inside the other window.

I can look into it. Seems to be a script bug. I guess you forgot to do something and that's probably why it happens. Have you visited the hidden place before getting there?

GOG has also included broken fan-made patches for other games like for example Quest for Glory 3. Maybe they added another fan-made patch. Are there any .scr files inside the game directory? If so, please list them (including date + sizes please).

Attached is a screenshot of the debug mode. I don't know what you mean with "also paste the message inside the other window". The screen you see is what pops up once the character reaches the edge of the screen.

Yes, I've tried both ways, before visiting the temple and after the temple. Also tried before the bandits appear and enter the temple and after that.

Sure, attached is a screenshot of .scr files.

2nd window doesn't matter, it isn't a signature mismatch.

It looks as if GOG added some more fan patches again *sigh*.
Room 216 is the bandit's camp. So 216.scr is the script for that and there is no script patch for that one on my original King's Quest 5 CD.

Try to move 216.scr, 22.scr and 220.scr to another directory, then try again.
It may fix your issues.

Your saved games should still work, at least in theory.

EDIT: someone just checked the current GOG KQ5 installation. It seems those files are NOT installed with the current installer.

Well, I moved the files and I was able to enter the bandit's camp. I also did the same with the SCUMMVM and it also worked.

Thanks for the assitance. Hopefully, it will help others if they encounter the same problem.

Those .scr files aren't meant for the English CD version of the game.
