No matter what visual settings I select, the game is in slow motion. The frag rate is at minimum. I can't even get past the opening sequence as it stutters alot. The sound stutters aswell.
Also, if I try to start a multiplayer game, it seems to work well, I can move around normally, although when I try to fire a weapon there seems to be some stutter and some small lag time.
I tried playing around with the visual settings & sound settings quite alot but the end result is the same. The opening sequence stutters and can't even get the game started.
Thanks for any input you may have. I run the game on a Compaq nx7300 with Vista sp1, Intel Core Duo CPU T2450 @ 2.00 GHz , 1 Gig Ram, Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family 256 RAM.
Could it possibly be the video card? Although I would highly doubt it. Also sent in a support e-mail, figured people on these boards amight also have some insight.
No ideas? Damn still can't play it.
Hmm... I've just tried Kingpin on my Inspiron 1525 which has an Intel GM965 (X3100) graphics "accellerator" and I'm experiencing exactly the same problem.
The game runs fine on my iMac running Vista (which has an ATI 2400XT) but is unplayable on my laptop so that makes me think it is the graphics chip or drivers which is causing the issue.
As Kingpin is such an old game I doubt Intel would care about fixing the issue if it is caused by their drivers.
Thanks for the reply. Yea I suspected it might be that. It's a pitty since I bought the game for the laptop. Guess that in order to play it I will have to do that on my home pc. It really is a bummer. The guys at tech support suggested the following :
Please try to change compatibility mode on kingpin.exe. Also if that wont help please try to experiment with this registry entrys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREGOG.comGOGKINGPINAFFINITY true/false HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREGOG.comGOGKINGPINAFFINITYCORE 1/2/3
But that didn't help at all. But who knows, it might help others.
I have a laptop with a graphics card, but when playing Kingpin I didn't use the grapics card, let the game use the onboard grapics processer of the mobo, it worked fine.

how to do that?
I am getting this same problem. if I hit esc the sound no longer stutters..
this is a game breaking glitch for me, I can't get past the intro.

after reducing some of the settings i was able to sit through the stutter to bring you this
I've got exactly the same problem. It's next to impossible to get through the intro and then the game itself lags dreadfully.
right click the shortcut or .exe
go to compatibility, select run in 256 colors. see if that alleviates the stutter.
I've got the EXACT same thing on my Vaio laptop with vista. When I checked it from the task manager, I saw that the game used 100 PERCENT OF MY CPUU!!!!!! What the hell is this? My laptop should be able to run a game that was released 10 years ago.

Thanks pal, that created a minor reduction in the stutter. But it still isn't playable :(

If you have a dual core machine set it to run on a single core also. It sounds like its trying to run on 2 cores and getting confused as to how it does that as it shouldn't be using 100% cpu if your computer is new enough to be running vista.
I have the same problem too. Nothing mentioned here seems to be solving the problem.. I'm running a Core2Duo E8400 with a GeForce GTX260 (182.50 drivers).
Hi,
I don't think its a Windows Vista issue as I run that OS and Kingpin runs fine.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit version. Duel core CPU with GForce 8800 GTS graphics card.
The ppl who are having problems who are using Vists. Are you using 32 or 64 bit version? Maybe its caused by Vista 64 bit if thats the case.
I assume everyone has patched the game to v1.21? If not you can get it as part of the KP starter pack from here - http://downloads.kingpinforever.com/kp_starter_pack.zip
I'm not running KP in any compatability mode or even as an administrator but I suggest ppl who are having probs try doing that. You could even try disabling visual themes in the Compatability tab.
I know KP has issues running with laptops with onboard graphics cards but I think that is only when trying to run the Monkey mod cheat protection client.
It may also be something to do with your monitor refresh rate.

I have Windows XP 32bit, so it may not be an OS specific problem as you indicated.
And the game comes up-to-date with the 1.21 patch already installed.
Disabling visual themes had no effects.. neither changing the refresh rate, but with a bit more investigation in that direction I managed to solve the problem. Kingpin doesn't like setups using two monitors in Dualview mode. As soon as I set it to use just my main monitor, all the stuttering went away. Thanks a lot for your input!
