KoDP exists on iOS devices (and in fact is updated there), but it now looks like those who own Android devices can get it as soon as August 12, 2014.

This is bound to have some new content, though how much remains to be seen.

Pocket Tactics has an article about this:
http://www.pockettactics.com/news/android-news/king-dragon-pass-performs-android-porting-ritual-next-week/
At release it will have about 50 new scenes, some with new art.
http://kingofdragonpass.blogspot.com/2014/08/android.html has more about the release tomorrow. (Other posts on the blog have info on what we’ve added to the game since the GOG version. Most with the original iOS release, but we’ve been able to continually improve the game.)
That's great news. I hope it works on Nexus 7 (2012).

From that blog it says:
"If you’ve played the Windows or Mac version of the game, this is the updated version, with a host of new content, more advice, heroquest hints, and a somewhat simplified game."

In what way will it be simplified? I assume it's because of something else because it says "and.." instead of because of the more advice and heroquest hints but I might have misread that.

From the iOS version, some of the 'simplifications' are what I consider simple bookkeeping. For example, in the original PC game, horses, sheep, and cattle are counted separately, but in the newer versions they are combined into a single category: Herds

Good to know, thanks!

The development blog http://kingofdragonpass.blogspot.com has probably covered all the changes. Don’t worry, it is really the same game. But you don’t have to worry about the fraction of crops devoted to wheat, or micromanage crafters or weaponthanes. Or run out of sheep.

BTW, the game came out a little early: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herocraft.kodp
I bought it for Android without playing it yet, mostly to support development of one of my favorite games (bit strange that it's more expensive than the GOG version though). I'd rather play the game on the PC than my phone though, is there any hope for an updated PC version?

Outlook not so good. Architecture Redux.

I don't really understand, couldn't they port the Android version to the PC? Even if the Android emulation or port is very inefficient it's not like the game need a lot of resources.

I just looked around and there are Android emulators for your PC, so it should be possible, quite easily actually, to play the Android version on the PC. Haven't tried it yet, but certainly will when I get back from work.

Thanks!

Though I don’t understand why this sentiment is going around. The mobile version is significantly enhanced (e.g. about 50 new scenes on Android, more on iOS) and can be actively developed.

No. The development system we used was discontinued in 1998 (yes, before we released).

I haven’t seen exactly how HeroCraft ported, but I think there is a reasonable chance it could be brought to desktop Windows. I don’t know what the economics of that are, it’s certainly a different market and I think they have only one game out for desktop Windows.

I do know that HeroCraft is concerned about piracy, so I hope that if anyone else is around with emulators you’re using a game you bought and not one that someone stole from us and posted somewhere. They told me that good Android sales make it more likely they will bring the game to other platforms.

Well it's quite simple, it's a beautiful game with a lot of text and menus, it might be nice on tablets, but I don't have a tablet, just a smartphone, and I think it will be too small on that. Also I like my strategy games with a big screen and a mouse.

Yes I absolutely want those extra scenes and features, which is why I hope for an eventual PC port or maybe a remake. If it can run on Android it should be portable to PC and Linux.

I'm going to try both the mobile version, and the mobile version with an emulator on the PC tonight. Maybe I'll be surprised.

I'd like to ask you why you are so hesitant to develop for the PC market? The indie-scene is quite big and sites like GOG, Steam, and Humble Bundles do great business for indie titles. People on PCs are also more willing to pay $10-15 for a small title, whereas many phone users don't buy apps over $5.
My sentiment question was about the cost, not the platform preference.

I am just one person, and have to focus.

In Gloranthan terms, King of Dragon Pass died. When heroquesters brought it back, it was to a new world that had changed. Just as Yelm had to behave differently after the Dawn.
I'm definitely going to try that BlueStacks and see if I can play the android version on my computer. Even better, maybe even hook up to my SmartTV, that would be cool.

cybrbeast, please keep up with your success (or failure) with BlueStacks. :)
