I think this might be the only hero I haven't completed and it's the only one I can count on failing, that and I also find Uralda to be harder than the others however it's doable. the steed I have attempted as best I can without a tribe, and it just hasn't been done.

anyone else having a similar situation?

NOTE: this is for the iOS version...or was it...don't remember anyone that game is gone

Yeah, it certainly seems to be the most random one. Not much you can do about it except for the usual measures. I wasted far too many people on this quest and made it once, maybe twice. If you go with Elmal you have to do it. Otherwise I'm doing pretty much everything except this one.

The Elmal and Uralda heroquests are the hardest.

Strange, I found Uralda very easy. At least for her the decissions always seemed to be the ones based on the story. If things didn't work out with the correct answer then that was unlucky. With Elmal though, when reaching the enemy that would need to swallow me so I could burn them from the inside with the brightnes of the sun (or am I remembering things wrong now? ;) ), it always seemed to be completly random which answer would work.
To my experience, neither of these quests is really complicated (in opposition of, for example, Humakt, where the humakti quester often loses his connection to his god in the opening moves, or Lankhor that can go all kind of wrong during the riddles). But they're deadly. It's logical, since the whole theme is "getting a beating that would kill anyone else", but it's easy to lose a hero in those...

The myth is your map to the heroquest. Even if you don’t learn the secrets of the myth, that shouldn’t really be a surprise.
Elmal's quest is attrition based. Make sure the quester has good combat skill. "Give of the clan's tears" is usually the best option to pick when they are wounded.
I had the hardest time with Orlanth and Aroka, personally.

I used the same quester for both that and Elmal guards the stead...

And..... Elmal Guards the stead was a dozen times easier for him, and he was a Worshiper of Orlanth.

There are several factors other than the quest's own stat checks. Clan magic (including investment into quests during sacred time), how long it's been since the last hero quest, stats of the quester, omens, number of people in the clan (supporting worshippers from other clans help), and whether you're in a tribe or not.
This was a year after the last quest attempt, with 100 helpers, two boxes of questing magic, one box of heroisim magic, in a tribe, with a heroic fighter, with omens hinting that there would be a lot of war on both years on both occasions.

I tend to quest under incredibly uniform circumstances once I hit the tribe phase.

When did the failure(s) happen?
1 year between 2 quests is quite short.

H2IWclassic: When did the failure(s) happen?
The first four times with Orlanth an Aroka, where there was only two with Elmal Guards the Stead.

I have confirmed this ratio via the magic of old saves today.

And.... I know I am attempting Heroquests a bit too often... But, I have proof my clan is rather well off at this point, and thus, am taking unnecessarily big risks to spice things up.:

Yes, but what stage of the quest? Getting into the godplane? The last fight?
The fight with the four enemies has had one success over all my tries.
