I know this is a very unique game but if you had to pick one game that is most similar to "King of dragon pass" what whould it be

(My Rating 5 out of 5 love this game)
Pfooohhh... You really like to have everyone rack their brains, don'tcha?

I'd venture though that the closest approximation would be a cross between a graphic text adventure like Shadow Gate/Uninvited and one of the Civilization games. Perhaps with a tiny bit of Actraiser in it too.

5/5 for KoDP too though, I love the unique feel of it.
There was a very similar game called "All Heroes Die", but development was stopped and the only available version is very buggy.
I would definitely say Darklands. Mostly for when you bump into encounters or walk around towns. You control 4 characters wandering around Germany (instead of managing a thula). But it's got the text based events that aren't totally random, with background pictures. The results of the your choices can vary. It's just on a smaller scale. It has a similar vibe a lot of the time.
Both are excellent!
Already posted this elsewhere, but: Lost Tribe.
- Paradox's games, especially EU: Rome and Crusader Kings 2, which have a character system in place. They're more traditional grand strategy games than KodP is, but the pseudo-random event system introduced by Europa Universalis 3 is very much in line with how events in KodP work. Especially in the sense that a lot of your development choices come through in-game events.

- Eador, which just came out and on GOG, is more in the tradition of HoMM, but it's got a very KodPish feel to it. And provides some interesting options you don't typically get in that kind of strategy game.

- A very different kind of game, but Legacy of Siboot would be worth checking out. It's based entirely around diplomacy and NPC interactions. I think it's actual freeware now. Abandonia has it.

- Another out of left field suggestion, but SimIsle. Not event-driven. Not sure why KodP reminds me of it.
New game coming out that is supposed to be like this called Banner Saga. Its not out yet, but its supposed to be a band of Vikings traveling around after some world shattering event. Combat is turn based so that's different, but it seems to have a similar feel to it. Look it up, I can't post links...
Also, fans of this game might enjoy 7 Grand Steps by Mousechief. It's out as a beta (you can pre-order and gain instant accesss) at the moment but should be fully released shortly. There's also a free demo.
The game that feels most similar to me is FTL. Check it out if you haven't yet.
Castles 1 & 2 are on sale at the moment. Has anybody played them? Do they share similarities with KODP? I've seen them mentioned along these lines...

I don’t recall Castles 1 as being very similar, but I was definitely influenced by one design element.
There is no other game like this, not really.

One game I thought of though, while playing KoDP, was Journey:The Quest Begins, the old INFOCOM game from 1989. It's an adventure/puzzle game but as you do things it turns your actions into a narrative.
The are simulation games with different themes that use the same kind of structure (but never as complex as KoDP and without most of the genre mixes usually)

Games like :
King of Chicago
Alter Ego (full game: www.playalterego.com/ )
Floor 13
Uplink

The simulation game genre is one of those that thrives on narrative complexity, choices and narrative content so it's natural they're very different from the crappy cinematic 'games' nowadays..

I wouldn't call them "crappy" more like simple and easy. But i get what your saying i love playing games with a complex narrative.
I won’t presume to say that Keith Nemitz was influenced by King of Dragon Pass, but I know he’s aware of it (I believe we ere both in the same Independent Games Festival in 2000). His new game, 7 Grand Steps, certainly has some of the same elements. There’s a free demo, so you might want to check it out.
