I've put together a Wine wrapper for Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Collection, allowing it to be played on Linux almost like a native game & with no Wine knowledge required.

Simply run the build script to create the wrapper. If the installer files are not alongside the wrapper build files then the path to them will need to be specified either by passing it as an argument to the build script with -respath="<path>" or by setting an environment variable named WINEWRAP_RESPATH containing it. You can change the path to build the wrapper in and the name of the wrapper directory with the -buildpath= and -dirname= arguments. The build path can also be set with the WINEWRAP_BUILDPATH environment variable.

The output will be a directory containing the game set up within a preconfigured Wine prefix, along with its own copy of Wine, extracted game icons, documentation, and start script(s). From there simply run the start script to play. The start script also includes options for creating a shortcut, configuring the wrapper etc.

(to uninstall simply delete the game directory and any shortcuts you created, and the game's user data directory in ~/.local/share if you don't want to keep your saves & settings)

User data is stored under ~/.local/share/jazz_jackrabbit_2, ~/.local/share/jazz_jackrabbit_2plus, ~/.local/share/jazz_jackrabbit_2_cc depending on the game.

Full details are in the readme.txt and release notes. Here is the download link:

jazz_jackrabbit_2_wine.tar.xz

Last updated 2021/07/11

The wrapper uses Wine 5.0. Wine and Winetricks will be downloaded automatically if not present; to avoid redownloading for other scripts the downloaded Wine package will be stored in ~/.cache/winewrap

JJ2 is set to run in windowed mode and as of the 2018/02/04 update the game window will automatically resize to something more comfortable (and will scale to maintain the correct aspect ratio) thanks to Zipplet's windowsizer tool (https://www.zipplet.co.uk) - more information about this is in the release notes. See this screenshot for an example (I've changed the windowsizer setting to scale to 90% so the game is displaying at 1440x1080 on my system's monitor - the default is 85%).

I have fully played through the game without any significant issues. The only issue I haven't been able to fix or work around is when quitting the display is blank instead of showing the game's credits (press escape to quit) - nothing major.

If anyone encounters any problems then post in this thread, Adamhm's Linux Wine Wrappers - News, FAQ &amp; Discussion and/or The "Judas&trade; does this run in Wine" thread v1.173.

Multiplayer has not been tested and may or may not work.

That's quite interesting. Thanks for sharing.
I maintain the JJ1 and JJ2 install scripts on Lutris (the Linux gaming platform, the modern alternative to PlayOnLinux, and not just for Wine). Just install Lutris on your distro and then launch the installer from the website. Feedback welcome!

GOG integration is in development.

That's another option, depending on what the user wants :)

I've never used Lutris but the intention with my scripts is to provide as close to a native-like experience as possible & do more than merely get things running - things like handling userdata more consistently, performing some initial setup, correcting for/working around various issues (both general and game specific) etc. and provided as an effectively standalone package much like official wrappers, except with a lot more (and more easily accessible) options for user control & customisation. Just run the start script to play, have it create a shortcut, access advanced options for Wine configuration and so on.

Amazing work. I wish GOG would do "official" Linux version based on these scripts. Perhaps even hire you to make similar wrappers for other windows-only games that run fine on Wine.
How do I change it so I can display in full screen? Not bothered about it changing my desktop res, I want to play fullscreen :p

In normal wine I would just use Alt+Enter but it doesn't work with this wrapped

Nice work anyway, any chance of a Theme Park wrapped someday? :P
Also jazz_jackrabbit_2_plus_wine.sh and jazz_jackrabbit_2_wine.sh don't work for me, only one that worked was christmas chronicles

Alt+enter should work (it does here). Failing that you can use the menu: Video --> 640x480 DirectDraw

If that still doesn't work then run the game in a virtual desktop and switch to full screen, then quit & try running the game without using a virtual desktop.

It looks like Theme Park uses DOSBox, so no... you can probably play it using the Linux version of DOSBox though.

If Christmas Chronicles worked then there shouldn't be any reason why the others won't work... are you using the latest versions of the installers? They were updated shortly after their initial release & my scripts require the new versions. Here are the filenames & SHA256 hashes of the updated installers:

Hi sorry for the late reply

I was using the original files when the game first got released onto GOG, using the current versions and all is working well now :)

Also can confirm got fullscreen to work, had to use virtual desktop as you suggested, was able to disable virtual desktop afterwards and remained fullscreen

Thanks for the help, and thanks for the wine wrapper! Hope to see you do more in the future :)

I'll test MP at some point when I get the time, and I'll be sure to report any bugs to you (if I come across any that is)
Bumping for today's update as it brings a very nice improvement: the game window will now automatically resize so you don't have to do it manually, and it'll maintain the correct aspect ratio :) Thanks to Zipplet for his work on the windowsizer tool that makes this possible

Hello

Does this work on ARM devices such as the Odroid?

Thanks

No, the game requires x86 hardware

Bad luck for those who have Linux or Macintosh and have bought jazz jackrabbit 2 collection on gog.Windows don't have such a problem.
