Yeah, I guess I'm still learning the beauty of this game...
Grizzly ran to a guy lying prone and burried his blade between the guys' shoulder blades...
In Drassen, I learned that my field of vision is not equivalent with the grid, therefore Grizzly took two bullets to the head point blank as I suppose his head was visible to the guy inside looking out the window... hahaha and he died :(
After surviving about five fights in Omerta and Drassen (almost cleared it) I guess my guys ran out of energy as they could not move more than 12 AP at most and most of them were bleeding from many wounds.
So my big question before I start another game (as I'm still learning the sheer size of this puppy):
is there a way to patch up/heal during a fight, as my guys bleed and lose precious AP and while I reach the next terrorist infested area, they are in no fighting shape... I know they ask me if I want to autoheal after a fight, but Raven and Blood just bled dry before I could do anything to save them... So I was stuck with only Buns and Ira left (and Buns ran out of 9mm ammo fawk!) and Grizzly died in the previous sector of Drassen (the middle one).
Tips are welcomed! :) Cheers!
You can use the small and large med kits to heal.
They work the same way as a gun.
Equip them and point at the target, which can be that same merc.
After healing their stats go up again slightly but are lower than when healthy.
This off course costs action points during battle.
I always equip anyone who has a higher than 0 skill in medic with 2 med kits.
Always make sure your mercs cover eachother and always be careful around windows and door.
A good team to start with is the following:
- create your personal merc and set marksmanship on max. Medic, repair, etc. can go to 0. Divide the rest to your likings over the other 4 stats, but have leadership at at least 35
- hire Fidel, Steroid and Burns
- get Ira
That based upon 1.12 and not the unofficial 1.13 mod which lets you create up to 6 personal merc.
Keep in mind that the questions during character creation influence the character.
Answering a question with the careful, sneaky answer leads to a simular character, but so does the aggressive and violent answer.
Ira has good intelligence and learns quickly.
Nevertheless I only use her for training militia as she quickly increases her leadership skill.
My suggested team covers all the basics, all have good marksmanship, Fidel does explosives, Burns and Ira are medics, Steroid does repairs and lock picking and can break open locks with crowbars.
When I play that team stays together till the end.

A wounded merc cannot carry as much equipment as he could when he was healthy, so the percentage next to "WEIGHT" goes up. While it exceeds 100%, the merc receives fewer APs. Depending on the situation, it might be a good idea to spend 3 APs on dropping a heavy item just to get the weight below or at least closer to 100%.
The trick is ofcourse not to get hit at all. A good tactic is to hire mercs with night ops and do night missions. Darkness limits sight range but mercs with nightops see 1 or 2 squares farther which gives you a slight advantage. Darkness also reduces the handicap of having to use weapons with short range as people can't see very far. Some of the mercs with night sight are:
Spider, Grunty, Wolf, Raven, Static and Stephen
Spider is friends with Raven and Static but stephen doesn't like Static. Static and Wolf sleep a lot. Raven becomes very expensive as she gains levels
Try starting a game with Spider, Grunty and Stephen.
Just be careful about moving into spaces near light souces (lamps, flares, etc)

I'm giving this a try now. I've played Xcom and Fallout Tactics a lot, neither of which make getting shot much of a problem - you can either buy new recruits cheaply or heal up quickly. They also don't place much importance on stealth, it's not really possible in Xcom and tends not to be especially useful in Tactics.
So it was a bit of a shock when I started playing this and ended up running out of money because I was spending 3 days out of 4 lying around Drassen while my squad healed.

It should not take more than a couple days.
Are you sure you selected "Medic" and "Patient" occupation in the Merc occupation tab ?
Gotta make sure that one is set to Doctor in the map screen and one is set to patient but also make sure that the doctor has the right tools for the job.

Such an awesome game, was back then, still is now.

It's so bloody frustrating though. Never seem to have enough AP, my mercs couldn't hit the side of a barn from 10 feet (even prone and 99 acc) and get stuck in frefights too much.

Just watched a guy run over half a dozen squares, then unload a machinegun in my guys face, then run back half a dozen squares and nip round the corner.

Sigh

You always have to fight battles depending on the mercs and weapons you have.

If you have longer-range rifles, you want to be in the open in daylight.

If you have shorter-range SMGs, you want to get NVGs, silencers and attack at night!

I tend to go the long range route, I like my sniper rifles (and start by getting Ruger Mini-14s).

A lot of people seem to prefer sneaking around in the dark though.

That's the best part of this game, the variety of tactics!

Where you getting the nifty guns from? I've got one rifle (came with Lynx, and now out of bullets) and the rest basically have handguns.

Finding bugger all decent, none from the shop/website and mercs have crap guns to start with.

Maybe I just need to get back into the swing of things after such a ling break :)

Oh trust me, theres a love there because of it!

But a sometimes the frustration makes me prefer X-Com as the better game.

The shop gets better weapons over time, so you won't get the decent stuff until you've taken a couple of cities.

If you're using the 1.13 patch, then you can access more weapons and get them as soon as you've got the airfield. Sometimes makes things too easy (unless you're playing on a very hard setting).

You can also try going to San Mona (or whatever that town is called). There's a secret gun shop there.

Oh, and if you're a big fan of X-COM, I'd suggest having a look here:

One thing Iearned from experience is that in this game, you can't go firing with minimum AP and expect to actually hit anything, expecially with your starting equipment. You should be putting extra AP into aiming the weapon most times you fire. It makes a HUGE difference.

Put extra AP into aiming? How does that work? \:|
